As seen in Legendary's auction, can anyone give me a reason why Mathewson wouldn't make the cut on this postcard?

My theory...
Carl Horner did not have a nice formal studio shot of Matty to use for the large Horner composite which is pictured on the postcard. ![]() All Horner had to work with was this odd photo of Matty with a hat which would have looked really out of place in the large Horner composite (as it does in this picture). Matty had his early formal studio picture taken by Ben Falk (not Horner) before visiting Carl Horner later in his career. ![]() So it's not about not making the cut as a player, but not making the cut as a photograph. Jeff, that makes a lot of sense, thanks. And Peter, that sort of sarcasm has no place on this board. No need to ruin the fun for the rest of us.

I would call it biting wit, not sarcasm, does that make it ok?

Jeff P. - makes total sense. I had always assumed that this image was a Horner. The Sporting Life used the Falk image and drew in his uniform. It is the same image isn't it?
This particular card was issued in late 1903-04. Last edited by Baseball Rarities; 08-26-2010 at 09:10 PM. |

I think it was because Matty was not photogenic.

So which studio took this photo used on Matty's first w600?

Good question. That may be an early Horner, but it would be very strange that Carl did not also take a photo of Matty in uniform. If I had to guess I'd say it's not Horner, but have no idea the photographer.

I do not know who the photographer was, but that image was used for the front cover of the July 20, 1901 Sporting Life magazine. FWIW, his name is mispelled "Matthewson."

Yes the same mistake as on the in uniform you posted Kevin.
What year did they correct the spelling of his name? |

They finally got it right sometime during the time of the type 4 mounts. I thought that I had seen a type 3 mount with his name spelled correctly, but I cannot find the image anywhere.
