I started over in 2010 (we moved). The best thing I did was put plywood (OSB actually) on all the walls before sheetrock. 3/8" OSB is dirt cheap $6-8 per sheet. With OSB on the walls, I can run a screw anywhere and hit solid wood
. Everything black in my room is from Ikea - maybe not suitable for pre-war collections but mine is more current. Ikea provided the bookcases (adapted to hang bats), ledges, chairs and flat file drawer units. It's nice to start over....you can have a plan.
