Question about vintage photos

I am contemplating buying some expensive pre-war baseball photos, a subject
about which I know little (although I have been reading up lately).

My question: does slight trimming automatically reduce the value of a
vintage photo, even if it does not compromise the object of the photo? What
about crop marks? I realize that these may be questions of personal
taste more than anything else, and the standards for photos and cards are
very different (or are they?), but some advice on these matters would be appreciated.
