Since you don't believe him, what's his motive?

A couple suggestions:
1. File a police report - this will make the process of claiming ownership of the cards easier when/if they show up again. 2. Put out a scan of the cards on the forum. 3. IMPORTANT! Register the cert. number with your SGC registry (if you do not have one, MAKE ONE!). SGC will email you when someone else tries to register your card. It probably won't be the man/woman who stole your cards, but an unsuspecting buyer. 4. If the briefcase was stolen from the cleaning staff, talk to the hotel and they will fairly easily be able to tell you who was in your room. 5. The approximate value of the cards is $5,000. You should emphasize the value to any authorities you talk to. I once had cards stolen by a maintenance worker, the matter was taken much more seriously when I brought in the amount. |

I don't know Edward at all, but the story sounded odd to me as well. I'm not saying that there is anything going on, but more of the story would be helpful. I am not in the habit of carrying the gems of my collection around in a briefcase...also, I'm pretty sure I can dig up a scan, or a record of grading for almost all my cards...might mention the hotel in the fuller story as well. I see why there is some skepticism, but cards stolen are always a tragedy. Good luck with the recovery!

Where did he get the cards? Surely the dealer has a scan, or submitted the cards to SGC and can find the serial number. |

He said they were his dad's. But yeah there must be some way to trace them back to someone, you would think?

+1, I thought something smelled fishy early on...but maybe I'm wrong. If they were his dad's, then either he purchased them graded or got them graded himself.
Once we have the answer to that, either SGC will help or VCP / google will help. If any are raw, then I believe the OP is SOL. Kinda hard to prove the cards were ever in your possession without scans or serial numbers! If this isn't a scam, then I can only imagine how horrible this would be!!
