This one has a happy ending, gang. Now the 55 Mays that I attempted a crossover on is a story for another time/forum.
Also, to clarify, this purchase wasn't for profit ("gamble" was the wrong term in the title). We lost an aunt to ALS many years ago, so this card has a special place in our hearts and goes into the permanent collection. Thanks everyone for your views on this.
