I wonder, too, if it's the evolution of his signature. Rice long had a reputation for being surly and unapproachable by both fans and media.
Is it possible that the 'scribbles' were obtained in the late '70's-early 80's? Rice's demeanor changed significantly once his playing days were over, and even moreso as his name lingered on the HOF ballot year after year.
