You are right to be very leery of a lot of what is sold on eBay. There are a lot of Babe Ruth autographed items, many legit and many questionable or worse. If you want some comfort level I would follow the auction houses that advertise here. Find out when they are selling and track the auctions. It is not difficult to get a Ruth signed ball and I would only buy from an auction house with a legit certificate of authenticity.
