The tone of the back is a fair indicator of age, as the backs generally get darker the older they are. Side by side comparison is important. You can even compare to your family photos.
As far as proving it's from the 1930s, the presence of silvering in the image would be great. That's a sure sign of a photo being old. Also, get a blacklight, as that is good at identifying photos made in the 1950s and later. But with some photos you won't be able to pinpoint the exact year/period, but it is good and important to be able to know that it's old. Thus, ruling out that it isn't modern is helpful.
