Day109 (April 18, 2020 – 109)

When I was younger, I really didn’t care for the baseball related stamps, but now I personally like stamps. In 1961 Topps inserted stamps which were around 1 38” x 1 3/16” into wax packs in panels of two. The stamps are unnumbered and pictured on brown or on green stamps.

Since we’re in 1961 I’ll also include a working press pass.

Posted for Clint (ksfarmboy)

Today Clint has ANOTHER great looking orange jersey... This time it's a 1979 Steve Stone game used orange example.

The 1971 Dallas Fort Worth Spurs finished the season with a 82-59 record in the Texas league (good for 2nd Place). They played in Turnpike Stadium which was retrofitted into Arlington Stadium the next year when the Rangers moved in (and subsequently played in for 20 seasons):

Here is their Team Photo with notable inclusions Mike Reinbach, Don Hood, Jesse Jefferson, Dyar Miller, Doug DeCinces, Enos Cabell, Wayne Garland, Tom Walker, Cal Ripken Sr. (MGR) & Junior Kennedy.

I always loved the "Mod Squad" look of their program:

Here is a nice vintage postcard of Turnpike Stadium that I had Cal Ripken Sr. sign with the year he managed there:

Staying in 1971, here is a Rochester Red Wings program/roster insert (from the Little World Series vs. Denver) from the first season that Joe Altobelli managed there...While Cal Sr. wasn't the manager I remember picking this program up because he is pictured on the cover from the season prior:

Bill,

You might be interested to know that the 1971 program also comes with a much tougher to find B&W photo on the front.

Thanks Alan....Something for the want list! Do you think they used a color photo since it was the AAA World Series?

For a long time I thought I had heard that Reinbach's death was a suicide (or perhaps it was originally reported as such). In looking on-line recently, it now appears as if it was just an unfortunate accident..Either way, he died too soon.

Here is a Mike Reinbach game used bat and an autograph that he graciously returned to me back on New Years Eve 1982...Somewhere I have an Orioles hat of his as well (which I'll post when I find it).

Bill,

My best guess is either the B&W program was a preseason sample or a late season extra printing when the team ran low on the color programs. The content of both programs is exactly the same, but printed in color in one version and B&W in the other. There's also no lucky number printed in the B&W version. I see the color version listed all the time, but this is the only B&W I've ever seen. The roster insert in the color copy is from Aug 2nd and there wasn't any roster with the B&W program.

Bill,

Great stuff. Here's a team issued photo of Mike Reinbach. He died tragically at only 39 in an automobile accident.

Default 1992 Orioles Crown Stand Ups

In the early 90's, Crown Central Petroleum sponsored a few sets of Orioles cards. Crown had long been associated with the Orioles and Brooks Robinson. Several items have been posted previously, including a few cards from the 1991 Crown set that had 501 cards. I remember being excited about the 1991 set because it was advertised as having cards of every player to appear for the Orioles. I was greatly disappointed when I found out that a lot of players in the set weren't pictured in their Orioles uniform. Crown should have given me a call and I could have helped them out.

I don't remember the 1992 Crown set being posted yet. The set is similar to the Johnny Pro stand ups from 1973 and were designed to punched out, attached to the base and stood up. They were issued in three sets of four cards and are still fairly easy to find today.

SCAN8510.jpg

The set consisted of 12 players - Paul Blair, Terry Crowley, Rick Dempsey, Bobby Grich, Tippy Martinez, Jim Palmer, Boog Powell, Cal Ripken Jr, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Ken Singleton and Earl Weaver

Today the Orioles have the 2nd pick in the MLB Draft, however I thought I'd share an original copy of their Press Release from the 1978 Draft, introducing their selections...

The Orioles chose third baseman Bob Boyce with their first pick (#22 overall), who unfortunately never made it out of Class A ball (Alan do you have any photos of him?), but notables in this draft for them included Larry Sheets, Cal Ripken Jr. (2nd round; note scouted as both a Pitcher/SS), Bob Bonner, Mike Boddicker & Don Whelchel:

Best I can do is a 1982 Miami Marlins card.

FWIW, I bought Set #3 to get the Paul Blair. I was cleaning up my home office this weekend and found the envelope with the other three (Crowley, Powell, Singleton.) I don't need or want them, but cannot bring myself to throw them out. If anyone wants them, PM me. I'll send them to you completely free, just so they go to someone who wants them.

EDIT:I'll also throw in a 1970 DC DMV Play it Safe set (minus the Blair, of course)

Day 163 (June 11, 2020 – 163)

The 1970 Kellogg’s Cereal 3-D cards are just plain COOL! The set featured 75 cards of the best players in baseball at the time. The cards were produced by the Xograph Company in Irving, TX. The Brooks Robinson card, of course, is my favorite card in the set. While the ’70 Brooks has been shown before both separate and in the rare six card, two iron-on transfer pack I’ll post it once again.

Mark,

It's interesting that the stamp panel of Brooks also includes John Buzhardt. Buzhardt had a nice career, mainly with the Chicago White Sox. He also had stops with the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros. Finding items of John Buzhardt aren't that difficult.

One of my collecting goals is to have a photo of some kind of every player to ever appear for the Orioles, but pictured in their Orioles uniform. John Buzhardt tops the list as the only player to wear an Orioles uniform that I've never seen anything with him pictured as an Oriole. He appeared briefly for the Orioles in 1967. I wish somebody on the site can please prove me wrong.

For the record, here's my top five list.

John Buzhardt 1967
Grady Hatton 1956
Roger Marquis 1955
Buddy Peterson 1957
Sam Jones 1964

Honorable mentions go to Wally Westlake 1955, Babe Birrer 1956 and Shane Turner 1991

Westlake and Birrer have team issued postcards that I've seen, but I only have copies of them. I have copies of photos of Hatton, Marquis and Peterson from other collections. I been lucky to find a Sam Jones and within the last 6 months finally found a photo of Shane Turner.

Alan,

Such a neat endeavor. You would think it has to be "possible" and "likely" that they had some type of picture taken as an Oriole, but the short timers could definitely be a needle in a hay stack. Of course when you do pick them up you definitely have to post and hopefully someone here can help with your goal.

Day 110 (April 19, 2020 – 110)

In 1973 Johnny Pro Enterprises of Baltimore put out a set of 28 Orioles cards that are numbered by the players uniform. These are great looking “punch-out” cards in my opinion and are fairly large; they measure around 4”x6”. Love the green background with the player featured in full color.

The 1972 Asheville Orioles finished the season 81-58 and won their division although they lost in the playoffs.

Notables include Cal Ripken Sr. (MGR), Paul Mitchell, Royle Stillman, Doug DeCinces, Dave Johnson (one of three Orioles to have that name), Mike Reinbach, Jim Fuller & Tim Nordbrook.

Also pictured is Mark Weems (who tragically drowned in Venezuela on New Years Day 1974 while out with Don Hood, Wayne Garland & Bob Bailor) and Don Hickey who has been mentioned by both Cal Jr. & Billy to me as being their favorite player when they were kids.

Their program was not a traditional one in that in was more like a folded scorecard with an insert:

For those who might be interested, here are Cal Jr.'s remembrance of that season in Ashville:

Bill,

Nice story on Cal's time in Asheville. Too bad he isn't pictured in the team photo as a bat boy.

Do you just collect minor league stuff related to the Ripkens or are you more of a minor league collector than you let on?

Alan:

I think it would be great if Cal Jr. had been in that team photo as the bat boy. My suspicion is the team picture might have been taken while the family was still in Aberdeen waiting for school to end.

Regarding Minor League things, I always liked the Rochester Red Wings just due to their rich long term relationship with the Orioles & the # of players who played with both clubs.

When it comes to the Ripken Family, I like to collect things related to any portion of their career (including minor leagues).

As you know the Orioles (Coke & Crown Oil sponsored) in 1991 issued a card set with every Orioles player who ever appeared in a game with them (I believe it was a 502 card set).

Obviously the set included Ron Jackson (whose photo you posted was the first one I've seen with him in an Oriole uniform; thank you).

I had Ron sign his card (with the inscription of "Not Me" lol), but do you have any idea on who is pictured??

Fun Fact: Bob Oliver was the last Oriole to wear #33 prior to Eddie Murray!

In Post #1253, Mike mentioned his experiences with both Rick Dempsey and Paul Blair at the Orioles Fan Fest in 2003.

My memories of that day include both hearing of the NASA Space Shuttle Columbia accident and meeting Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler who would unfortunately pass away from the misuse of Ephedra only two weeks later:

Bill,

What a tragic story of Steve Bechler's death. I think the Orioles were very high on his talent.

Do you remember if Tippy Martinez was at that fanfest signing autographs? I'm missing the team issued postcard of him from 2003 that was supposedly given out at the event.

Mark,

It's a labor of love for sure. Believe it or not the Orioles themselves don't have photos of some players to appear for them. A few guys were picked up while the Orioles were on the road and released before they got back to Baltimore. As you will notice, I prefer posed or head shots over action shots, where it's difficult to see the player's face

Here are a few more toughies to find pictured as Orioles. A few had great careers after leaving Baltimore or arrived at the end of successful careers.
