I just saw this—great job Tanner. Sometimes it just takes fresh eyes to make new observations and you provided that and made a great Cartophilic discovery.

Tanner, that was a fun and informative read. If you are really going to look for a first edition of Casey, there are a few known appearances in books that actually predate the accepted 1901 edition, if that makes a difference. I have had 2 that I traded to a baseball book collector and I am aware of at least one other. There is a bibliography by Gardner that is a good book for information but may be a bit outdated.
I have seen very early appearances in books which list other authors for the work. A fun thing to look for are the appearances of the poem associated with Harvard reunions. I have also seen the nice 1912 edition inscribed by Thayer as “Phin “, so be on the lookout. |

What a remarkable story!!
Thank you so much for sharing and for the sleuthing, as well! I live pretty close to Stockton, and I had no idea about so much of this! I'll be sharing this story with friends who would enjoy it. (and as a die-hard Giants' fan, I'll add Kelly to the list of people I'll now read about!) Cheers!
