For those of you with limited experience with Atlantic City, I would certainly recommend paying a bit more and staying with one of the casino hotels. There are a world of motel type accommodations and, frankly, most of them are sketchy at best. And not safe at worst. There is simply no way I would go cheap in AC carrying cash or inventory or a bankroll. Pay the extra $100.
I have a lot of knowledge of AC. If anyone wants my 2 cents on a particular place pm me. Happy to give you my opinion. The Trop is a perfectly fine place to stay at.
