Possible conspiracy theory (but it may be reality??)...
  Hate to say it, but if they are working to eliminate the demand for SGC (with the intent of making the brand disappear) what's the most obvious thing they can do? How about giving out grades that are demonstrably lower than what the cards warrant? (That topic is talked about every single day.) It's a two-fold solution, as submitters will be so pissed at the bad grades that they will refuse to send any more cards to SGC. And what will their next move be? How about resubmitting the cards to PSA to get 'proper' grades...which will generate more revenue (off of the same cards they paid SGC to grade) for the PSA mother ship. Truth is stranger than fiction.
