Default Brown's Boxing

When Dave Bergin posted his eBay auction for the Brown's Boxing publications I was so excited that I had to send Dave a PM. It brought back some great memories of collecting those boxing cards. He responded with a terrific history of Brown's Boxing. Here is the PM I sent to Dave. Perhaps Dave would be kind enough to share his knowledge.

"Wow! Those are so cool because I have never seen or heard of them before.

I had all of the Brown sets, but sold them last year with Love of the Game Auctions. After collecting baseball, football, hockey, boxing and wrestling for over 60 years I decided it was time to let everything go. I've still got a couple years to go before completing the entire task.

I actually met Johnny Brown by chance when I walked into a small card shop in Rolla, Missouri in the early '90s. Everything in there was baseball except a single 8X10 picture of Mike Tyson on a support column in the center of the shop. We talked about Tyson for a minute and then asked if he had any more boxing stuff. He said no and asked if I had ever heard of Brown's Boxing Cards. I said sure. He said, "Well, I'm Johnny Brown." What a shock! We chatted about the cards and boxing in general.

He said he didn't have any of the Brown's cards left. I was a little suspicious, but said, ok.

I sent him a brief letter and thanked for the time we shared. He send a very nice response.

Several months later, I returned to Rolla. It's about an hour and fifteen minutes from my home just outside of St. Louis. His shop was locked and completely empty. I was very disappointed that I did not get to know this nice man a little better.

Anyway, I really appreciate seeing your eBay auction. If I was still accumulating I would surely bid to win all of them. Best of luck with this, Dave and all your boxing auctions."
