w514 Joe Jackson currently on the Bay

I was planning on bidding on this until the seller responded to my question in regards to the authenticity of the card:

Hello,

Here is what I know. I listed this for a friend of mine. He ran into a
guy
who helped take care a some older lady (who passed away several years
ago).
This guy was given a box of about 200 old baseball cards and "flag cards"

(whatever those may be). So this guy stopped by my friend's table at a
sports collectibles show at the mall and asked if he woould be
interested in
looking at the cards. My friend went to his house and tried to buy the
whole
box off the guy but he wouldn't sell it yet. He is still trying to get
the
box, but in the mean time the guy sold my friend this one card since he
went
out of his way to check them out. That is all I know about the card. My
friend has dealt with baseball cards and collectibles and he said that
according to books he looked at it is an authentic 1919 Joe Jackson
tobacco
card.

So let the buyer beware. His friend who is knowledgable about baseball cards didn't even identify the card correctly and his story is a very familiar variation of the attic/estate sale find

that looks pretty white for a legit w514. everyone I've ever owned is creame colored.

The card in question looks pretty good. If it's a fake, the dotted line is a nice touch that I've never seen a reprint before. Color looks right too. Definatley something to pay for withy our credit card or some other way where you are sure you can get your moeny back if the card is bad.

bring a loupe or magnifying glass and make sure the printing matches up. Also check to make sure they are made of the same paper stock. I haven't tracked the w514 Jax in a while, but in this condition it will probably go for $300-500 depending on just how crazy the market has gotten in the last year.

If I were you, I'd look closely at the color of the Sox emblem. From the Ebay scan it appears more dark/black than the original. Hopefully your common is a White Sox.

color isn't going to be a big concern. Ink colors are all over the place on these strip cards. I had a Cobb that was really washed out looking and Ruth that was on almost the opposite end of the spectrum. The big concern is that the printing style matches up along with the paper stock.

There's a large, backwards "J" in pencil on the back.

Of course, mine is quite worn--I suppose the one on ebay could be a fresher copy of mine, but the lines do look awfully strong, the colors awfully dark. On the whole, I'd think the one on ebay was probably real, if I could get my money back after examining it up close, and changing my mind.

He only HALF misidentified it--the tobacco part. It IS a 1919 card. I also find the visable cutter's line convincing.

just to update- i havent been able to hook up with the seller to look at the card in person (through no fault of his). with bidding already over $440, im out anyway- i cant bring myself to spend that much money on a strip card.

of the board beating someone to death who's trying selling a legitimate card. The scan in the ebay auction looks more legit than either of the two real ones posted by board members.

I would agree 400+ is alot for a strip card but I think strip cards are really an unexplored area and I think will grow in value and popularity in time while other more main stream cards will stay the same...

Scott, b2b's scan is just poor quality, and Julie's scan is small, but they both appear to be real cards. The scan of the Ebay card is good enough to see some areas which raise suspicion. The lettering at the bottom doesn't look solid and one color. There's no indication of a black border around the White Sox logo. The fine lines for his hair and the fine lines under the bill of the cap seem to bleed together and are darker on the Ebay card. The lines on b2b's and Julie's card are sharp. Fines lines are printed on dollar bills to look different when copied.

All of this could be attributed to the quality of the seller's scanning abilities. I wouldn't hesitate to bid on the card if it was offered by a trusted seller who'd refund my money in case it turns out to be a fake. If you contacted the seller about a guarantee and you're confident with his reply, then there's nothing to worry about.

Don't know that I agree on your analysis of the various scans presented, but even if I were willing to buy a strip card I wouldn't buy this one, for some of the reasons you listed.

First of all, it isn't a scan, it is a digital photo. Much of what has been commented upon results from foreshortening when you take a picture from a single point. That's why the card looks bigger at the bottom and darker/muddier at the top. Scanners don't have that problem because they move over the full surface of the item from the same distance throughout.

Second, the very white scan posted here looks like it has been color-corrected using an automatic color correcting program. My program does the same thing to tight scans of W cards, completely washes then out. Many scanners are set to automatically color correct, BTW. You have to manually turn off that option.

I bailed out of the bidding on this card (pulled my snipe) not because I felt it was potentially fake but because I felt it was getting too high given the scan quality. I'd rather pay a bit more for a Fatima Cleveland team card and get a real photo image of JJ.

These have been selling well for quite some time now (W514 Black Sox Players). I just sold a Chick Gandil on ebay in about G condition for over $100, and I know people pay $400-$500 for nice condition Weavers and Williams from this set so I am not surprised at the final price at all. This is not a new trend but if you have not noticed the prices going up for the last 3-4 years it might seem steep.

W514 Black Sox sell great.

Two years ago I bought a decent group of strips. I got $300 - $700 for (7) Lefty Williams, over $800 for SGC 80 Weaver and $500- $600 range for another Weaver SGC 60 (I think).

I sold a SGC 60 Gandil for $300 at the most recent Ft. Washington to a dealer.

What amount the Jackson got isn't surprising from what I have seen personally.

For paying over $1500 for a PSA 8 Tom Barker Jackson. At least it has a real photo of him.
