Thinking of putting together a rather crappy T206 set
Posted By: Dave
I'm seriously considering trying to do this for the fun of it. While my money spent on cards is already at the level of my wife gritting her teeth, I'm thinking about trying to put together a fairly poor man's set of PSA 1's, minus the big four of course. For the most part with the money I already spend it may be just picking up one T206 a week or so, which would I guess take me about 10 years if I go at that pace, may have to make it two a week. The things we do to pass time I guess. |

As the owner of a low end partial SGC T206 set (483 cards - 10's, 20,s and 30's mainly), I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how good some of the "rather crappy" cards look. |

do you generally emphasize your card on having decent fronts with maybe partial paper loss on the back or is having a full back intact more important??? |

I have 128 cards of the set ranging from 1-5. You'd be surprised how well a 1 presents itself if you can live with a little paper loss on some of the HOFer's All the 1's I have of HOFer's have fronts that would grade 4-5 and were aquired for under $100. Good luck on your venture. |

Just to have sort of a direction to go in, I've always been moreso intrigued by the portraits. Does anyone know a site that lists all the portrait cards from the set? I know most checklist have a players portrait card spelled out if he has more than one card, but there are many that only have one card and its a portrait, I haven't found anywhere that breaks the list down like that. |

this topic is very near & dear to me...i have been collecting T206's for about 15 years now...and i am constantly wrestling with the idea of whether or not to build the monster in low grade (quantity) OR just keep a hand-ful of very high grade select cards (quality). |

How much approximately would it cost to put together a low grade t206 set (minus the big 4), just assuming today's prices hold current for the sake of simplicity. |

that was another question of mine, trying to figure out how many commons there are, how many southern leaguers there are, then have to get a break down on each hof'er what they are going for in 1's. will take three days jsut to do that...lol |

You can definitely find some nice looking psa 1s or sgc 10s out there. One of my favorites (no creases or wrinkles, just a little paperloss on the reverse): |

my hope with only picking up one or two cards a week and trying to be somewhat selective and frugal, i could find a common at $20, a slguer at $35 and a hof'er (the lower priced ones anyway such as a clarke, griffith, wallace) for $60-$65 |

the jefferson is a portriat, and probably at best a Psa 1, maybe a SGC 20, its pretty crinkled. Also, if anyone knows a site, dealer etc. that has PSA 1's for bargains, under $20 i'd like to know, you can email me directly if it causes an issue to post here. Thanks. |

I'd love to think you could find SLer's and HOFer's for that price, but I think your estimate is a bit low. Unless your talking a beater set, lower that 1's, than you have a chance. I've been looking for the last 18 months and those prices don't happen on the cards I have been watching. Too much competition for the lower end HOFer's and SLer's. If you plan on paying near $100 for the 1's of HOFer's and SLer's you won't be disapointed as often. Now commons you can find lots of bargains in the $15-30 range. Good Luck. |

Trae, very nice, exactly what I was looking for. Joe, it will definately be a beater set. Its not common to see the HOF cards going for $55 or $60 I know, but one falls through the cracks now and then like that. From what i've seen over on the auction site, about one a week. |

yup, there are a few on there I'm watching. of course most of them have like 6 days to go. as far as if card has a good front or good back but creases, it will probably depend on the card, and the price. |

also, there are always cards in lots on eBay: lot of 20 commons, lot of 12 HOFers, etc...usually low-grade & raw, but exactly what you are looking for, cheap low grade in quantity...then send them in to PSA, get 1's & 2's back... |

i think i'll personally come out better buying already graded. that will save $13-$15 bucks on each card there, plus shipping. frugal is as frugal does. been surfing the dealer sites for someone that has a PSA 1 portrait for under $20, and still looking, I may be 40 years out at this rate... |

You never know what kind of deal you can get thats for sure. this was my best t206 deal (percentage wise as far as a profit this year) unfortunately to keep the additction up had to sell it, paid $38 for it raw and sold it for $225. |

I've always had a special place in my heart for this one -- probably because I soaked it off of a cardboard piece that had 15 other T206 cards glued to it. The fact that I was able to get it off in tact, without ruining the card (the back has some specs of paper loss making it a 10) was a minor miracle for me... |

If you take your time you can find some nice deals.. I just picked up a Evers bat on shoulder graded VG3 for 110. I think you have to be reasonable with the HOF's and SL and expect to pay more, deals can be found but less often. Commons can still be found for excellent prices IMO. |

You can peruse past Mastro auctions to determine what a complete beater set goes for, but I would think $15-$25K would be about right. |
