Just to play devil's advocate, and forgetting Leon's position for a moment...if you were a paying advertiser, and you saw that someone could promote their business by posting a link on the main page, isn't it possible you would drop the banner ad and spend a little bit more time posting, with the goal of finding an opportune time to conveniently add your link? I think paid advertisers have rights too. Whether they belong on the board or not is worth debating, but at the moment they are alive and well (and paying their monthly fee).

Edited to add this is less relevant as Leon was posting at the same time I was.
