I think they were the Quakers but used the nickname Phillies back then -- much like the Highlanders were the 'Yankees.'

The Philadelphia entry in the National League (Andrews' team) was known as the "Quakers" from 1883 through 1889. Starting in 1890 they were known as the "Phillies."

During that same period, the Philadelphia entry in the American Association was know as the "Athletics."

All you guys guessing the Quakers are correct.

But, Kevin....ole buddy....you answered this quiz perfectly.

They were 1st called the Phillies in 1890. Andrews had left the team the year before.

The Phillies that we know and love today is a transplanted major leauge team. Where did they move from and what was the team nickname?

PS Not only were they the Quakers pre-1890, in the late teens they reverted to the Quakers again. In the '40s they tried to change the team nickname to the Blue Jays but it never caught on (this is why you often see Blue Jays on pennants and programs from the '40s). Been the Phillies ever since.
