Is there a reason that people have already bid on items in the Hake's auction? I just looked through their rules, and it looks like there is no need to place marker bids.
Am I mistaken? Thanks, Charles |

I don't want to sound mean, but how the heck can anyone mistake that guy for Buck Leonard? And it's been in 2 auctions listed as such? Wow. Maybe it will be relisted as Josh Gibson.

Glad to see the stand-up job by Hake's to come forward and look to make the necessary correction. I wish that I could be of more help in identifying the player, maybe one of our resident Negro League experts will have an idea.

I wanted to say this in the 'other' thread, but felt like it might de-rail things.
We were given eyeballs for a reason - it actually helps us survive. I can look through a pile of pictures and pick out the ones who look like people I know or recognize. Yes, some are questionable, but I can almost always tell you if a picture is NOT someone. I don't begin such an exercise by first looking at a long list of reasons why this person is or isn't someone, formulating my opinion by 'provenance' prior to looking at the image. The 2nd image is Buck Leonard - I'm told that and I believe it. So I look at the first image and because I'm human and have working eyeballs, I can tell that the first image is NOT him. Even if he were wearing a fake mustache and a clown nose, I could tell it wasn't him. Now, if the first image had looked like the second image, I would THEN look at the details (such as ears pointing in whatever directions), and decide 'No', it isn't him - even though it looks like him, the details are wrong. Finally, if it still looks like him, I would then look at the provenance - for instance, the back of the photo might say that it is 'Joseph Doe' who was a jazz musician in Paris, and the photo comes from the estate of a French family. Obviously, the provenance is telling me that these two guys just happen to look a helluva lot alike, but they aren't the same person. The AJC Dag was evaluated backwards. No one ever got around to using their eyeballs.

Actually, I think it is Ben Cartwright.
