I have not seen one of these threads over here yet and just got this today. Not the best one out there (actually very far from it) but it is just right for me (actually a bit of an up grade, my other is a bit more loved). |

Nice Campy Ray! That was the first graded card I ever bought, and still one of my favorites. |

Here are a couple I picked up at a local flea market on Sunday. The coin is an Armour Hot Dog coin (with the usual stain) and the second is a mini record made by Mattel in 1971 (if anyone has a scan of the record player for these records, I would really love to see it). |

Wow, I used to have one of those Mattel Players (Instant Replay was the name I think). The Mays disc, if I remember correctly, was a call of his 500th home run. I think I had the player and 4 discs at one point in 1971. No clue what happened to it but long gone now. |

This is interesting- got the 2 Leafs today that were posted above, and they look very sharp. Too sharp. On a hunch I ran the certs of all the cards around those 2, and virtually all were '49 Leafs rejected for trimming. What are the chances my two are fine? I'd bet about 0%. |

Meaning what? Your 2 slipped through the grading process? Not that I know much about the process, but the cards surrounding yours that got rejected cards get/got a cert #? Huh? Set me straight. |

Paul- take the cert numbers on my 2 cards. Plug those numbers into the cert lookup on psa's data base, and add or subtract to the cert number to get the 10 cards on either side. LOTS of Leafs in those 2 submissions rejected for evid of trim. Dan M. had a post last week on CU about a similar occurance and the discussion was whether a grading company should reject an entire submission if a large % turns out to be trimmed. I think they should once it hits about 30%. Based on my 2 cards that don't look good to me I think they were trimmed but the graders missed them- and if 90% of a submission has trimmed cards I would be inclined to think the rest were as well. |

Thanks for the explanation. I understand it to mean that the rejected cards are assigned the numbers in the grading co. database just for reference purposes. |

An ebay win. I have always seen these in vertical strips but almost always the dyer. These have a texture and backing paper like the issued 77 cloth stickers and are the first I've seen where both players are attached (there are no other players) on the strip. I have one of the thin felt versions of dyer as well but just missed out this week on a 3 card lot with all 3 felt types. Anyway, an interesting little test/proof set or so I've always thought: |

I like your choices, Dennis. I always thought the '54 Bowman was overlooked. I just started paying attention to their prices lately, and it seems to me that they are somewhat on the rise a little -- at least the better conditioned ones. Possibly they don't get handled as much as more popular sets. I could be wrong. Have you noticed that? |

paul,54 bowman and 58 topps are the least popular of the 50's sets/design(always have been) and both are among my favorites. in our post favorite set of the 50's i don't think either of these are even mentioned. the 58 topps set is, to me anyway, very much the same design as the 33 goudey and i'm the only one to see it. as far as condition i think you can find nice ex 54's because of their unpopularity. where as nice 53 bowmans are costly. |

I agree Dennis. There is plenty of similarity among the Goudey and the '54 & '58T sets. |
