The postman just delivered this mistake a few days ago. I collect Giants and the seller said he thought this pin was related to Bonds. I had a week to think about it and it was literally minutes after I won it that I searched Baseball Reference to see McGwire hit 65 HR after his 70 season. Pretty convinced that’s who it’s related to. I may or may not throw it back on ebay for five bucks.

Purchased what I thought was a scorecard from Dizzy Dean’s last game.
He last pitched on September 28th, 1947. He was a broadcaster for the St. Louis Browns at the time and on the last day of the season, he came out of the booth and started the first three innings. He performed pretty well before hurting his leg while on the base path. You can read the interesting story below. https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/09/2...eturn-of-dizzy Anywho, the attached scorecard was advertised as being authentic from an estate sale. When it was received however, I could tell it was a reprint and just made to look old. It did not cost very much, but thought I had gotten my hands on something special. |

As an avid antiquer, I have made many mistakes. Just a few weeks ago I bought three fantasy Ruth pins (two of the sultan of swat ones and the we remember one) at Brimfield. I should have known better and/or checked with friends who know more than I do but I bought them (total dollar loss around 300). I also bought a pair of rough condition boxing gloves at Brimfield that I thought were rare/valuable but they were worth a lot less than I paid (paid 30, worth about 5).
I suffer from my own hubris in most situations when I make mistakes. I almost never look anything up online before I buy it. I also rarely ask for opinions. Don't feel bad for me though as I make plenty of decent finds. I enjoy the hunt and researching things later on. I just hope my decent finds outweigh my mistakes. Alan |
