WAR loves Pete Crow-Armstrong

Unlike Kyle Schwarber, WAR (at least on Baseball Reference) seems to love Pete Crow-Armstrong who currently leads all NL position players with a 6.3 WAR. It's surprising since none of his stats really jump out at me. He's currently hitting .250 with a .290 OBP and .493 SLG for an OPS+ of 124. He has 28 home runs and 83 RBIs. I guess fielding and base running help him a lot, but he only has 31 stolen bases and has been caught 7 times. I'm not sure about how he does with taking extra bases. I guess being a good centerfielder helps.

Any thoughts on why he is so high in WAR?

Yeah, I noticed that to. He’s been slumping but still seemingly getting closer to the top of the MLB WAR leaders chart every day.

WAR loves above average CF’s who are great baserunners.

Tatis is the one that surprises me. He plays in RF where WAR usually goes to die. He must be playing like Jesse Barfield wrapped into Roberto Clemente with the Defensive bump he’s getting out there.

Yeah, he leads the NL in dWAR with 2.5

And he has a ton of extra base hits--28 HRs, 34 doubles, and 4 triples. Kind of the complete package.

He's somehow also only grounded into 1 double play. Contrast that with Soto, who is also having a monster year, but has 16 GIDPs

He has been absolutely worthless as a hitter since the ASB, though.. To the point where I think it's fair to wonder if the first half of this year was a mirage.

Even with all the extra base hits, his slugging percentage is not in the top 10 currently in the league. It seems like it's his defense and base running that are what really has his WAR up so high.
