The highlight of my year was picking up a pillowcase w/Cobb, Baker, Mathewson, Speaker, & Johnson. I had purchased another S110 w/ O'Toole awhile back & was thrilled with it, but when I found the one with Johnson, forget about it. I like T3's, I have a Cy Young that I'll keep for a long time, but the large display value of the S110s with the greats of the game just blows me away. If only Honus would have been included. |

I don't buy much anymore but I did pick up an 1860 Base Ball Player's Pocket Companion, so that will have to qualify as my best for 2007. |

It's been a great year for my collection as I added four items that had been on my wish list for years. A rare double knob Lajoie bat, Joe Wood Ness City, Kansas photo, 1972 Orioles away jersey, and with Dan B's help a Duff Cooley postcard. It's difficult to choose one so I picked the one I haven't shown in awhile. |

Hi, Brock. The letters were removed during the '73-'75 renovation, and sold by the demolition company. I bought the M from the original buyer. |

This just illustrates one of the greatest aspects of memorabilia collecting. Just look at the array of options and niches. For me, Aaron's trophy and Clint's bat would make the best additions to my collection, but I have a great appreciation for the photos, pins, and everything with visual appeal. Others prefer historical significance and a team association. I LOVE IT ALL!!! |

A interesting item I recently acquired was a first edition of a book published in 1796 in Germany. The book, titled "Games for the Exercise and Recreation of Body and Spirit for Youth" and written by arguably the most influential German author about children's games, describes in detail many different games children played at that time. In it is a section on what is described as "Ball with free station (or English Base-ball)." About 7 pages plus a diagram are devoted to describing the rules of the game. These published rules, many of which apply today, predate by 49 years the Knickerbocker rules. To my knowledge this is the earliest publication of baseball rules, as well as the first published reference to the word "bat" in a baseball context. This book does as good a job as any of dispelling the fiction that Abner Doubleday had anything to do with the invention of baseball, or that baseball is American in origin. Whether baseball was actually played in Germany in the 18th century is a matter of debate, as it is clear by their description that these rules came from the game played in England. |

Well, it's by far not the most expensive thing I picked up, but definitely the most interesting (and possibly the rarest). I bought a hardcover book about the Brooklyn Dodgers signed twice by Hilda Chester (once on a photo of her--the only known signed image). I only know of one other Hilda Chester autograph in existence, so, being a huge Brooklyn fan, picking this up was quite a thrill. I don't even know when she died. Does anyone have any detailed biographical info on her? |
