I knew Van fairly well back in the 1980's. He had quite a few Cool Pappa Bell autographs. He claimed he did a lot of the legwork to get Cool Papa in the Hall of Fame.
Van died August 8, 1999. Jeff

Sad to hear that he passed. On the "Up" side I heard that he had won the lottery once. the BIG one. I never met him but spoke on the phone alot around the same time 1980's , early 1990's. He'd send me boxes of stuff to sell and say "make me an offer on what you want and send the rest back".
He told me once that he asked Swede Risberg point blank about the 1919 World Series Fix and Risberg DENIED ever having participated and said he was "aware" of it but played all out.
