Something really endearing about those cartoon postcards. I'm of the impression that "Bill" is a baby sending messages to his Aunt Minnie via the pen of his cartoonist father. Is that reasonably what's going on? Great baseball content, wish I had some of the B'ham T210s to show. Any chance you'll post some more of these?

Great piece from Monty, Robert. I'm glad I got to see it in person last summer, as well as actually meet the artist. Aside from having some great pieces he was able to show off at the National, he proved to be just a really nice person.

Didn't you end up commissioning a ball form him as well?

Speaking of Monty Sheldon, I believe he did some of the original artwork for
the Helmar Beer card set.
The cards are then size and look of T205's
Here's an original artwork that's almost 8 x 10" w/ the photo that the art was taken from
and the finished product on the Helmar certificate.

I really like what Charles Mandel and the Helmar crew are doing. Best modern cards going in my opinion. I picked up this original watercolor at the last Chicago National. It was painted by Kalaish Raj and is about the same size, a tad smaller, than a T3. Snapped this photo of Monty Sheldon; seeing all his stuff at once was incredible.

Default I've enjoyed all the items posted!

I collect the comic art from Topps cards - I've been collecting it for some time.

However, I would rather post on this Mad comic art I picked up around a month back - one of them is from copy #207 from 1979:

from the mag:

I liked Mad comic as a kid and I was very excited to have found a couple of items on ebay.

He is working on a Starffin card for me now.
Hope to see you in Baltimore this year at the National.

Default more on Sheldon

Robert... Thanks for posting the scans of some of Monty's work. He's completed around 500 of the Artballs so far. Fortunately I own a few..... Jay... While Monty has done work for Helmar Brewing, he did not do any of the art for Series 1 cards. Exposure to that set is what put Monty in touch with Charles Mandel. He has since completed more than 100 works for Helmar. This past fall, Monty was approached by Topps and was invited to work on their Chicle (Football) series, along with other artists. He is currently finishing up several pieces for a 2010 Topps baseball series, which should be on the market in a few months...

Default Birmingham Barons postcards

David:

your observation is right on, if I remember correctly.....I think there's even one that relates to "baby Bill" being born, although I only posted the cards which featured the better Barons-related drawings ( there are others with Barons references, plus some re: the life of "Bill" in general )...I'll dig thru the others and maybe even upload a few more images that contain baseball content.

Hey Robert,

I totally forgot about that Victor Starffin ball. If I remember correctly, you told me about it in Cleveland. He was your favorite player, right?

I'm sure I'll be seeing you in Baltimore, though as of now, I doubt Dean and I will be exhibiting. I doubt I'm going to have the time to build up the inventory in time for the summer, as everything I'm doing now is commission-based. I'm hoping to have some time to paint some images for myself, but this year's looking pretty darn busy as it is (not that I'm complaining).

Either way, I'll be there that weekend, and I'm sure I'll do my best to annoy you guys.

In the early 1950's there was a tabloid publication called "Grandstand Manager." John Kiely was the resident artist. Here is an original Kiely of Hal Schumacher.

Two weeks after this cartoon was in sydicated to many of the newspaper of the day. It ended up along with me at a charity event for 9-11. During a Omaha Royals baseball weekend ball game series.

...reminded me of one I did a while back for Beckett but it didn't run.
Sorry for the low quality pic. Had to use my phone to take it.

Edited to add... this really isn't a shameless plug but one of my Report Card cartoons is pre-war related...

long time viewer, first time poster. feel a little silly posting some art, due to the talent/minds that are involved in the net54 community, but did want to introduce myself in the form of showing some of my pieces and thought this might be the best place to do so. really have enjoyed and appreciated the conversations that take place around these parts. thanks in advance for taking the time to check out my work. heres to future conversations.

Chris,
Great stuff. Welcome to Net54.
I went to your site to peruse your art. Wow some really nice work. What is your medium? It looks like graphite pencil or similar.

Best,
Mark

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share my Lou Gehrig sketch I received from Scott Silvers, the art teacher from Florida. Like others have said, Scott is a true class act and the pictures do not do the drawing justice. I am really looking forward to getting this in a better frame as soon as I can. Sorry for the poor images. They were taken from my cell phone unfortunately.

Lovely work, Chris. The three-dimensionality you've achieved on his nose and cheeks is pretty top notch. Keep it up!

Bob, I'm lovin' the study of Wagner's hands! Very well done - let's see some more!

Some beautiful artwork guys! Especially like Chris's work and, well, then there's Graig's work which is from another world (I'm still saving my pennies in hopes of getting one of his beauties some day).

Default Original artwork of pitchers that threw two or more no-hitters

All of these pieces are original art that I own in my personal collection of guys that pitched at least two no-hitters in their career:

Nolan Ryan- Original watercolor by artist C Johnson. I don't know who Mr. Johnson is, but he has skill!

Bob Feller- This Week in Baseball newspaper cartoon by Hollreiser (circa 1970).

Bob Forsch- Original color pencil sketch by artist Amadee. This ran in a newspaper in St. Louis

Don Wilson- Charles Linnett circa 1973 original charcoal drawing and original photo that Linnett actually used.
From the Charles Linnett archive.

Johnny Vander Meer- Original 1940's artwork from News of the Reds artist
and original oil panting of net54's own Graig Kreindler (2012)
