Exhibit card question
I've never collected these but was thinking about getting the Salutation set to fill a gap in my collection.
My question is this, Were all 83 SCD listed cards in the set sold every year (1939-1946) or were cards added/deleted/changed throughout the course of those years. For example. In 1939, could I buy the Hank Greenberg "Truly Yours" and "Very Truly Yours" or we they only available at different times, and what years were those? I did a search of the threads here and didn't see an answer to this. |

Boy, were they ever...
The company basically added or dropped players as they went in and out of the majors. So, the Gehrig card is the key SP--obviously, 1939 was his last year in MLB. Gabby Hartnett is another really tough card; he was out of the majors in 1941. Johnny Rizzo has bedeviled a lot of us--a goner in 1942. The players with multiple cards had changes to their cards for some reason; the tougher ones are SPs from limited time frames. Also bear in mind that the cut-off dates between the salutations and the later cards are really random. If a player lasted past 1946, his salutations card was sometimes printed well into the purported run of the 1947-66 issue. Ted Williams, for example, had his common salutations card printed into 1960.

So is there a way to know which cards were printed in say 1941 specifically.
If I only wanted the cards that were printed in 1945, is there a way to know which cards were included that year and/or what variations? This seems to be a real confusing set. |

Its a super set with some really cool cards but as Adam said some cards are very common and easy to get others like Gehrig and Rizzo are very tough and can easily sell for 10 times the commons.

This seems so bizarre to me. If the cards were clearly produced in yearly series and there are a specific number from each year that make up that year's offering, how can there be no documentation on what cards were made each year.
Apparently there was a year or two in which only 12 cards were made and the other years it was known that 36 came out in each year. How can something like this go undocumented in a mature hobby like this. |

Exhibit cards
The "father" of Exhibits Elwood Schraf checklisted these cards the way you are looking for in The Trader Speaks a hobby publication back in the 1970's.
I have all the lists directly from him as well. If there is any specific years checklist you are interested in LMK and I can send you what Elwood listed for each year. Fred |
