Per PSA's website, series #1 (card numbers 1 through 180) were printed with both white and gray backs, with cards numbered 1 through 100 containing more white backs, while cards #101-180 containing more gray.
http://www.psacard.com/Articles/Arti...baseball-cards Since Mantle's 1956 Topps card is # 135, the white back variation is more scarce, and would be the one commanding a premium, if any. However, in looking at recently sold PSA 5 1956 Topps Mantles, I'm not seeing any discernible premium on the cards with white backs. There's been a pretty wide variance in where this card has sold in the last few months, and that could be impacted by things like centering, and eye appeal.

This may be lost on most people here, but these are 4 of the absolutely toughest 1972 cards to find in anything better than (at best!) 90/10 left to right centering. Look on ebay and virtually every single one of these is terribly miscut with only the slightest hint of white appearing on the left side. I am completely psyched to pick these up for my ever improving set upgrade!! 1970alyea303.jpg And this is the cool 1970 variation where the baseball is missing from the cartoon on back. (I guess I should've scanned the back, too.)

The 1972 "In Action" cards are the coolest cards of the 70's.
I just don't know how they missed Lou Brock. |

One on my all time favorite cards. And just think even with the hole it's still 99% all there. That makes it an "A".
