Let's see some football cards!
I went to the bank today to move the contents of one of my safety deposit boxes to a bigger box. I moved the one that had my football cards in it. There they were 65 Joe Namath, 76 Walter Payton and the rest of the guys. I also found the triplets.
Help me relive my football collecting childhood by posting any card you want. I chased all sets up to about 1982. I'd love to see your favorites or whatever you have.

Well, since I don't have anything new, to speak of, to ad to the "new acquisitions" thread, here are some things from my collection I like. Not the most expensive items, but a little off the beaten path.
Purple and blue sky versions of 1963 Johnny Unitas. 63's are by far my favorite football set from the 1960's. 1959 Bell Brand Rams still sealed in cellophane. For the Rams collectors, like myself, the BB's are the holy grail to collect. Interestingly, even as expensive as they tend to get I still run across dealers, even ones who specialize in vintage cards, who have no idea of their existence. Finally, when you think about football matchcovers, the first thing that comes to mind are either the Diamond Match covers from the 1930's, or the Redskins covers from the 1940's-60's. I found these 2 1950 Lions covers on ebay a number of years ago and didn't realize that they represent a set of 2, at lest that is what I have been told. If others exist I'd love to know.

Nice group of Brown RC's. The centering on that last one is awesome!

Thanks Richard. The 63 Unitas and Brown were the only ones from that set that I didn't come across as a kid. I never seen a Bell Brand card either.
Larry thanks for sharing that info on Conerly it was very interesting. Here's my favorite Jim Brown card.

1967 Topps #116 Ben Davidson ( nice moustache ) didn't play High School football because of his height 6'8" and had a ten year NFL career. Involved in a bench clearing brawl vs KC Chiefs in 1970 when he speared Len Dawson while Dawson was on the ground. Did TV and commercial work after his NFL days, and passed in 2012 prostate cancer.

Larry, great stuff! I agree, "WHY?" about the funny ring checklist. I also like the taped name on Gooses helmet, must have been a training camp picture.
Here is another 1963 purple/blue sky pair of Bernie Casey. After a successful 7-year football career, including a pro-bowl nomination, Bernie began a successful acting career. He played in such films as "Sharkey's Machine", "Never Say Never Again", "Spies Like Us" and "Revenge of the Nerds", along with numerous other films.

1968 Topps #19 Keith Lincoln. A nice picture of Keith but I like this card because of the stadium in the background. It appears to be Buffalo War Memorial Stadium and there are some cool images on google. It was demolished in 1987 and even hosted a NASCAR race in 1958. Back to Keith. He had an eight year AFL career selected AFL All-American five times. Caught a 91yard TD in 1961 and he ran back a 103 yard kickoff for a TD in 1962. War Memorial Stadium looked awesome and Keith wasn't to bad his-self.

Richard: I have a few of these purple/blue sky cards in my collection. When I see a stack of '63s at a card show, I always take a peek I grew up in Southern California and was a Rams fan. I know these Bell Brand cards exist, but don't have any of the football cards in my collection. I have some of the Bell Brand baseball cards.

Love Davidson's mustache pre Rollie Fingers. Piccolo looked like a bad ass and those 51's are in great shape.
Larry I don't recall where I got all three Browns. I do remember most dealers practically gave football cards away.

ks - I remember a particular card dealer back in SoCal, probably early 80's, who didn't deal with football, only baseball. He would, however, get quite a lot of football in collections he bought. When he accumulated enough he would just load it up into shoe boxes and sell them by the box full, regardless of year. There's no telling what treasures were in those boxes. Too bad I wasn't collecting football at that time.

Great stuff, guys! Lots of great football out to discover if you haven't yet wandered far from Topps, Bowman, etc. Here are examples of some hard to complete sets. How many can you name?

JP - Those are fabulous! I love oddball and regional issues, although I have very few
Here is another, probably more commonly seen, cereal issue. I recently found the Norm Standlee card to finish the football set of 5 (minus the reverse negative Trippi).

Fred those are some very nice looking 1950 Bowmans. I actually purchased my first 50's Bowman from you a while back (C. Trippi). I have been looking at both the Tittle and Otto Graham and as soon as I find the right one I am going to make purchase. I have been on Quarterback buying frenzy lately. Here is my latest.

Working on a FB HOF card only auto set. Completed my Heisman signed card set (all college uniforms). These are some of my favorites. The Hein is personalized to me, this card may very well have been signed to me as a kid and sold by my dad when he sold his collection. Pretty cool if it made it's way back to me some 40 years later!

Those autograph cards rock, Tony! I particularly love the Mel Hein story as I'm working on an autographed set of the 1955 All-Americans. Here are a few of the ones I have:
