Took about a month, but put this set of Billy Williams cards together as a gift for my son! Still short a couple of cards for the full set, and have already upgraded the 1965 & 1970 and picked up the 1972 IA card today, but not by my scanner to get them scanned in.
I would like to than all of the Net54 members that assisted me in putting together this set of cards! Still looking for the missing cards and also would like to upgrade a couple others before giving to him if anyone can help with any, just let me know!

Thanks again,
Steve

Nice job on Billy W! His 1964 is one of my faves.

That '74 has always puzzled me. Why did Topps put a dreamy, surreal bright yellow/green background on that sucker??

A few odds and ends to the "Rookie" Collection. Nothing spectacular, but I enjoy them. The Kellogg's Eckersley was in a PSA 9 holder and the Kellogg's Murray was in a PSA 8.

Yes, it really jumps out! Do you think there's any chance it was just the actual photo, maybe with a weird glare or reflection? I will say I kind of like it. And Williams himself may stand out a bit more against the background than if it were regular coloring.

Very cool 74 Williams; never laid eyes on that card before!

Finally found the centered 75 Ryan of my dreams.

This was an unusual pickup for me. I don't normally go after autographs. Still, here was a great looking card of a star I didn't already have in my 1976 collection, and the autograph seemed to add that much more to the aesthetics.

I read about it on the WhenToppsHadBalls blog and thought, "Yes, this really is a beautiful card."

Nice 75 Topps Nolan. 75's are tough to find centered. Congrats.

Default Finally a centered one...

...my scanner doesn't do well with the thick old Beckett slabs....the sub-grade on the back is " Centering 9.5" which is pretty heady stuff , coming from BGS.

So true; I've looked at it several times now. Really strikes the eye like an 8 it's so nice. A true find. Again, congrats.

I saw that too. Heck i didnt even notice the chipping as pointed out.
Who in their right mind would spend 50 bucks on it? LMFAO!!
I think the guy didnt understand the point coming across of spending over 1k for what is graded a psa9 (that looks like a 8).

if I had to pick outright, i'd take matt's copy.

the twelve hundred dollar difference would just be the cherry on top.

WELL, I DID IT AGAIN!!!
This was the one i was going for intentionally, but i could not pass up the regular Topps i got before. SO, i picked it in hope, i would not be left empty handed. Now LOOK!!!
I ended up grabbing BOTH!!! a TOPPS & a MILTON BRADLEY verson
And after putting it down my want list, i guess it was about timing here. I defintely did not expect this outcome, I had thought i would grab my Mays RC before this happened.

Very nice Ryan RC.

I was very excited to get this one in the mail today. I was on the fence because I was looking for one in a higher grade, but I love the centering. Thanks to matt c for helping to convince me to pick it up.

I picked this up because the prices for everything I actually need for my collection seem to have spiked substantially recently (anyone out there with a 1960 Venezuelan Mantle/Boyer or a Meadowgold Dairy Mantle?). I purchased this as a "proof," but my assumption is that it was just hand cut off of a sheet that made its way out of the factor. Would love to know if any of you think I am wrong on that (the back is complete as well):

@pokerplyr80...Thats a stunning Clemente RC.

Guys, This is one of those weeks, everything hits me all at one time.
Earlier i got the Nolan Ryan RC, then just yesterday i got the Milton Bradley version of it.
Saying that i would of gotten a Mays RC before them. WELL.....
ITS ONE OF THOSE WEEKS
I had no idea my bid was even strong enough at the time, it held up for several days on end and i was maxed out...thinking yeah i getting a email saying outbidded.
Woke up today and found an invoice instead.

MAYS 51 Bowman RC ....Holy Donkey Shitz!!
I know its off-centered, but i got it more for its vibrant color and none of those print lines.

That is a pretty impressive week. Very nice looking Mays. That one is on the very short list of cards I'm looking to pick up some time soon.

I hear you there...my want list items seem to keeping creeping up and up like a helium balloon perpetually out of reach. I did cross a few more off my list this week. Would have liked Pete with a little less discoloration on the blue corners, but otherwise the card has great colors and looks great in hand.

ok, snagged this thursday night. was listed as a buy it now or OBO at a stellar price to begin with. seriously thought it was a scam. fired off a ridick offer and guy said that price was fine if we did it off ebay and thru FF (red flag). again, thought it was a scam so I hit the "buy it now" for 3 reasons:

1. even at the BIN price it was a steal..if legit.
2. if I could grab it at what i offered thru the BIN it was grand larceny..if legit.
3. if it was a scam, then at least someone w/ less knowledge wouldn't get burnt.

so, get the guy's paypal address, he wanted FF but i sent $200 more via reg paypal via amex to cover the fees and that it must be shipped for sat delivery. I'm double protected, so what the hell...

well fri rolls around and i get a UPS tracking number via email around 2:00 still not convinced. try tracking it and says "label has been created, yada yada yada. still not dropped off" i've purchased something like this before and have got a tracking number. some were never dropped off and one was even sent to savannah, but to some completely random address. anyways, it was friday and after a long day we went and had some drinks. it was on my mind but not pressing. i honestly thought it was a scam. but like i said, i've played this game before and knew that i was covered. might i have to make a few phone calls if it went south? sure. but it was definitely worth the risk! again, it was a long friday, topped off w/ several crown/gingers/lime w/ a splash of water so i never checked to see if it was dropped off...well i woke up this AM to the UPS truck in my driveway, the doorbell ringing, dogs barking and the wife saying "who the hell is that this early on a saturday morning"....i just grinned and thought to myself "hangover is either going away instantly or be severe"!!!!!!

box was small and felt a lil light. could it just be an empty box? of course. that's happened too. well open her up, sift thru the 8 peanuts in the box and low and behold there is something in "a" piece of bubble wrap. looks like a mantle. so, i go thru the normal protocol...case looks good, check! black light test, check! double check images online vs card in hand, check!

it is altered, but i knew this via flip and the guys listing even stated it. border was built up on right hand side about a 3/4" (neck high, black light test image below), but the centering is fn crazy for this card and the price could absolutely not be beat...

begsu1013 - nice story and great looking Mantle, it presents very well. Just goes to show one never knows what they can find on ebay.
Any idea what was used to build that border back up?
I will hoist a crown and ginger as a toast you on this pickup tonight.

yossi,

no clue what was used to build it up but i think whoever did it, knew what they were doing. if anyone knows the process, I'm quite curious now...

i just know that the paper used prior to '55 (i think) does not glow under black light. when i was putting together my 52 set someone enlightened me to this. the only thing i woulda suggested, and don't know if it's possible, would have been to use "pre-war" paper vs the new glowing paper.

this lil tidbit saved my arse on the jackie robinson card but absolutely crushed the guy I was going to buy it from when he saw it glow....

and cheers!!!

Was going to hit the BIN on that one... got caught up and then when I came back to buy it soon after, it was gone! Nice get!

Thanks shaun. I thought about that 52 Mantle as well. He had it listed in the b/s/t here. That centering is tough to find for that price.
