I looked and looked, even with a magnifying glass. There is no sign (to me) that anyone sanded the bat at all. The grain looks contiguous.
I took a photo of it. It feels totally smooth, just like the rest of the barrel. No divots or indentations. Anyway, thanks to everyone who gave their opinion. I also want to take a second to acknowledge jpop43, who sold me the bat. By asking questions, I only wanted to see if I could find some more information. I was in NO WAY implying that he sold me a fake or tried to scam me. I was totally happy with the deal, and he went out of his way to disclose everything he knew about the bat in advance.
