1950 Tinghalls World Cup Backs Thread
I have always been interested in back variations of cards. I love that one of the most iconic soccer card sets, 1950 Tinghalls - which includes some of the coolest & rarest team USA cards - has lots of different backs. So a while back, I started cataloging different 1950s Tinghalls backs.
As of January of this year, here are the different backs that I had cataloged:
*Note: I have consolidated hues of the same color (such as darker blue/turquoise and orange/red) in this list because I am not certain that they are different colors versus less ink of the same color. For years I have tracked Tinghalls on Swedish auction sites and have always been fascinated about two variants that exist for the local Swedish teams but not for the World Cup teams. One is a yellow/gold back letters, and the other more fascinating is what I call the "Dead Fish" back because it shows a picture of what looks like a dead fish. I assumed that these backs don't exist for WC players, only for local teams. Well earlier this year I found a copy of a World Cup player with the Dead Fish back, so I can officially confirm a 13th back variation of: 13) Dead Fish / Bordtennis Back - "Bast i Bordtennis Aidst i Bordtennis (Black Letters) Dead Fish Back - Bast i bordtennis Aldst i bordtennis (Spain - Basora).jpg Dead Fish Back Spain - Basora.jpg I am really excited to finally find a "Dead Fish" back for a World Cup player!!!! Now, I would love to hear from others who own Tinghalls cards about what backs you have. Some of the things I am wondering are:
Any other information or feedback on Tinghalls backs is open and appreciated in this thread as well. |

I am not sure my attachments came through. If you can't see the attachments for all the different backs, let me know and I'll try again.

Hey Jonathan
I went through about 50 or so of mine, I found a few that I do not think that you have...
The RAIA orange back and (maybe) a couple of color variations on Flamengo backs - I cannot really be sure given that colors are different... you be the judge....

The Flamingo backs I would consider lighter shades of the same variations. The green is sometimes really strong and other times lighter and I would consider the one you showed to be the same as #10 on my list. And the dark color that goes between black, grey & brown for the Flamingo back I have also been calling what I list as #7. But I am excited to catalog the orange Raia since I have never seen one of those before. I have a couple other questions on card backs, if anyone has any input: 1) At times I have wondered if the backs were hand stamped instead of printed. Does anyone know how to tell? 2) Does anyone know what these back specifically advertise? Candy, cigarettes, a bit of both? (or how they were distributed) |

Not sure
But what I am told is with candies. I have not found any references to confirm this. Surely you have seen some cars with “bands”. I believe that there was a small paper band that “bound” the card to the candy made of a more absorbent material than the card itself. Thereby the “strip” would absorb the candy and with a higher concentration of the candy material were thereby transferred to the cards. Pure conjecture, but I have a number of cards that would support this hypothesis.

New Back Variation Discovery
I have discovered a new back variation. It is the same black Raia back card, but it does not have a phone number. This is on the back of a Wocanin Team USA card from the set. This makes 14 different confirmed Tinghalls card backs.
Attached are images of the front and back of the card, as well as the Raia back without phone number next to one that has the phone number. Interestingly enough, the Wocanin card was from a group of Team USA and other Tinghalls cards with black Raia backs but all of the other cards included the phone number. I have no idea why they left the phone number off the back of this one or if it's a unique anomaly. If anyone has an guesses, I am open to hear them.
