OT - Of interest to metalheads only (and Kingston Trio fans)
I found this today while cleaning my office.

Hey Doug, nice snag. My mother in law did the same thing on the campus of UC Berkeley in 1959. She had it ever since until she gave it to me to frame. I think the musical spectrum has now been covered between Metallica and the Trio...

The best part about the circle is that the first time I ever saw a band perform live was when I saw the Kingston Trio at Disneyland.

I was outside the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago May of 1986, waiting to get in to see Metallica, when from above us (about 1-2 stories up) came this liquid. Luckily it was beer and not something else.
Cliff Burton (Metallica's bassist) was hanging out the window opening and pouring beers down upon us fans and laughing. And shit we were like 15 or so, so to us FREE BEER. Cliff would die about 3-4 months later when their tour bus flipped, but that day in May I still can see it and was awesome!!!!! Last edited by Shoeless Moe; 03-22-2020 at 09:10 AM.

Glenn Tipton - right instrument, wrong band, and that's his real name. I'll have to dig out my 1980s Priest tour program that I got Glenn and the rest of the band to sign... Hint - the band name is written on the guest list... The Cliff Burton era Metallica put lots of effort into living up to the well earned nickname "Alcoholica". The first time I was at the Aragon was for the Venom / Slayer / Exodus show on April 5, 1985. Yesterday I talked to a buddy of mine who I met at that show. Many years ago I had the pleasure of helping them to their rooms at the hotel I work at...I really only recognized Nick Reynolds...the short one with the crew cut...but barely as he was bald and used a cane...As I recall they put on a concert in a tent on property and I was called to pick them up after they finished and get them to their room...I don't think hardly anyone my age knew who they were because they had long before then waned in popularity...even by the time I was in high school....but I knew who they were...But I'm one of the few my age that's been to a Four Freshman concert LOL...anyway I think I asked Reynolds where were their striped shirts in jest...they all just laughed if I recall...I remember helping Reynolds into his room and he had a little standard room...He didn't seem to care...and he was very upbeat...The last surviving original member Bob Shane just died January 26th 2020...over the thirty two years working that job I've seen some interesting things...

I was working at a collectibles show in Massachusetts and met Ray Manzarek from the Doors (one of my favorite bands from my youth). I was outside on a cigarette break (I've since quit) from my booth where I had some antiques and collectibles set up for sale. Ray,who was there signing autographs,came out and asked me for a cigarette. Of course I obliged and gave him one. We ended up talking for a few minutes about the Doors movie and other Doors related stuff while we smoked. I was pretty star struck and babbled like a 16 year old girl. He was really cool though and asked if I wanted an autograph when we both went back inside the show. I said absolutely!!
He went back inside and continued to sign autos for different people at $20.00 each. I stood at the end of the line waiting to get him to sign a photo for me. Doug, here's the Megadeth Peace Sells guitar. Got it about 6-7 years ago at a Nashville guitar shop. Sounds great with EMG active pickups. Here's pics of my #1 also. Randy Rhoads Jackson V. Hard to pick up and play, can't even come close to the greatest guitar player of all time. Just like to look and imagine what could have been. 38 years since he passed this past week.

Testament is one of my all time favorites. Saw them on Slayer's last tour here in Nashville 2 years ago, they were awesome! New album releases this Friday, sounds amazing from what I've heard so far.

The Devo list bought back some memories. Saw them Halloween in 1982. Some other stubs from my first concert Kiss Nassau Coliseum Feb 1977 to Amnesty international 1986. THE Clash, Ramones, Talking Heads New years eve 1978, MC5, Marshall Tucker, Bob Dylan, Bad Company, Black Sabbath ( opening act was Van Halen) Bruce Springsteen 10th row 8/78. Background Lou Reed Auto from Mannys Music World. He sat there jamming Sweet Jane for about 45 minutes testing amps.
Then Who Stubs from the 42 Times I saw them Canada ,UK, and 17 States. From 79 to 82. Buttons From Led Zepplin Saturday June 1977, Bowie 78 And Bruce 78. And although I dont agree with his politics. I was a big Ted Nugent fan saw him Capital theatre and MSG in 1977 Spectrum in Philly 78 and MSG in 79 AC/DC was opening act. Best Club show I ever saw was Gang of 4, Black Flag and REM at Roseland Ballroom in 1981. 1981 I also saw U2at Palladium in NY. Seems like 5 lifetimes ago... but were good times

NICE.. yes he Rocks I have to say that from 1977 ( he had just released Cat Scratch Feaver) to 1979. Ted went through some changes. Band with Derek St. Holmes singing and Ted focused soley on guitar. Ted was tight. By 1979 he was out front wearing a tarzan outfit swinging from the rafters. As I mentioned AC/DC opened and frankly blew Ted Away which would not have happened in 77.
Madison Square Garden 1977. Great show Unfortunately between when show anounced and date of show Airplane crash took away American Treasure. 1979 Alvin Lee at local college gym. By the way love the autographed Nugent stub...

If you are up on your Testament / Legacy trivia, that's the show where the drummer bailed after soundcheck, and nobody noticed until just before it was time for them to go on stage. Various roadies and fans tried to cover for him, and generally failed. Doug "stories? I got a million of 'em" Goodman PS - I dug out some pics...

Terrible Ted went to my High School. However he was there before I got there, but you'd still hear the stories. It was an all boys Catholic school, so yah not sure if it was the best fit for him, and years later he offered to fund a football stadium for the team, since all we had was a field, literally grass only.
But the Priests and Nuns said NO to him. Mistake. ....and Doug love the pix and stories......I'm gonna stump you yet on a band, unless you really do have a story with each. Steve "Dr. Killdrums" Wacholz played so hard, and used such huge sticks, that when we ran out of them on the road I would buy plunger handles at hardware stores for him to use until the new shipment of sticks arrived. We would round the edges by scraping them on the pavement so that he could use them without instantly cutting thru his drum heads. I was going to see W.A.S.P. one time (I think at the Stone in SF, but they cancelled. I went to the Rainbow one time years later and Blackie was working the door. I saw Lita Ford at The Stone in Aug 1984, but that's about it. She was certainly a looker, but I was partial to Doro Pesch from Warlock (and later Doro) or mostly Dawn Crosby from Detente. While we're all reminiscing in this thread, have you ever have anything to do with the band Armored Saint? I saw them around 1987'ish when they opened for Alice Cooper. I had no idea who they were before I went to the show but I was blown away by their performance. I've been to probably 300 shows over the years and never saw them again. lol

On February 15, 1982 their limo driver hit EVERY light at yellow between the San Francisco Cow Palace and their hotel, which means that I ran every light at red. And, I owe Phil Rudd an apology for being so excited for succeeding in my quest that I didn't realize he was getting his bag from the trunk, until I had driven away.

My Armored Saint story is me and a friend arrived for their scheduled show at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, to find it was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales (only time that ever happened to me). Found out Saint decided to play The Thirsty Whale (nearby River Grove), a bar that played exclusively metal bands (mostly local). So I stood in front of the stage for a full Armored Saint set in front of 300 people max. They came out for an encore all dressed in bathrobes and with bottles of Jack. In the middle of "March of the Saint" John Bush starts spinning in circles, swinging a 1/2 full bottle and WHACK, I get a full blow to the side of the head with the bottle. I don't think he even realised what happened but I sure did. I knew right then what the phrase "I saw stars" really meant. That said, I recovered my senses and continued to headbang. Well, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any more METAL than that for me (concussion or not)!

Great Savatage story Doug! I’m a big Savatage fan. Their STREETS album was the first CD I bought when I started switching from buying tapes to CD. And Hall of the Mtn King is a great great album!

This is a great thread for many reasons, I will add another one.
I had not picked up a guitar is at least 2 years. After seeing the ones Tony posted I got one of mine out and did some playing yesterday. Wrist and fingers started cramping after about 15 minutes. Luckily that went away and I messed around with it yesterday and some this morning. Way better than binge watching TV or just playing on the net.

I don't play, but thinking about John Bush / Armored Saint led me to youtube and his appearance with Metallica and I ended up with a neck / back ache from watching the Mercyful Fate appearance from the same show...
