Default Production Estimates / Print Run Archive

Looking to create a relatively "comprehesive" list of print runs and production estimates for certain vintage issues, as well as the "junk wax" era and modern sets, etc.

Not sure of the best way to format it yet... so will just have to see how the data starts to present itself.

Searched the forum for previous threads, although didn't turn up much. So if you know of any relevant threads or information please attach.

-- -- -- -- --

Edit -- I'll eventually put into a spreadsheet, but for now just going to keep an updated list right here in the initial post. Any suggestions on how to best organize the list are appreciated.

SN# - Serial Numbered # /xxx
NN# - Non-Serial Numbered # /xxx
Est - Estimate
B - Base
X - Subset / Extended / Specialty / Oddball
I - Insert
P - Parallel / Limited Edition / Commemorative
S - Sample / Promo / Test Issue
Other potential notations?

I am not 100% sure they are not still printing 1988 Donruss, 1990 Fleer, and 1991 Topps.

Jason: It would be great to have as many print runs as we know listed in one spot to refer too. As a past dealer I have many press releases as I'm sure others on here have. I'll start to look for a few. I do have a couple available which I will start posting later.

As far as the Topps Tiffany cards, here is an article regarding the print runs...

https://www.cardboardconnection.com/...baseball-cards

For the 1984s, an old article in a 1984 SCD mentioned there were only 5,000 sets....not likely true as I have one set #d "06393". The 1991s have been rumored to have a print run between 3,000 and 5,000.....the highest #d set I have is "3176". Since the 84s have a 5 digit serial number I would go with the 10,000 print run and with the 91s having a 4 digit serial number, a print run of 5k would be a reasonable assumption.

Here is another thread that discusses some 1950s Topps print runs:

Amazing stuff! For right now I'm just going to keep editing the initial post as information comes

Re: savedfrommyspokes on the Tiffany sets - I'd always heard it as

1984 - 10k
1985 - cut production to 5k
1986 - 5k
1987 - 25k-30k
1988 - 25k-30k
1989 - 25k (15k Traded?)
1990 - ?
1991 - 5k?

Any idea on the "send-away" All-Star Glossy sets? 1983-1990?

Here's a few more :
1996 Leaf Limited ( 45,000 foil boxes)
1993 Score Select Rookie & Traded Foil Boxes (1950 #'d cases/24 boxes ea) = 46,800 Foil Boxes
1994 Score Select Series One Foil Boxes( 4950 /24 box cases ) = 118,800 Foil Boxes.
1994 Score Select Series Two Foil Boxes ( 4950 /24 box cases ) = 118,800 Foil Boxes.

Hoping to also move more into the great unknown with estimates of the base years everyone knows/loves.

So going to start adding some loose estimates starting from 1975 Topps. Read somewhere that Sy Berger had remarked in a book/interview (source?) that Topps printed 500m cards in 1975. Might have been figurative... but also seems possible. Would be ~750k/card. Need to assume a certain % was "consumed" by the hobby - used, creased, lost, thrown away... to get to current stockpile

Any thoughts/input on starting to estimate the vintage/junk wax base sets for Topps - much appreciated.
Just threw in 750k/card for modern vintage and 1m/card for junk wax for right now

I'd also love to try to back into production #s for some of the "common" insert sets from the 90s

I would like to address the years 1989 Upper Deck base and 1990 Topps base. I have done some research into the printing of 1990 Topps. Also, Pete Williams' "Card Sharks" gave readers an unprecedented look behind the scenes of the production of 1989 Upper Deck. According to the book, the initial release of 1989 Upper Deck was for around 125,000 cases. That's 1.4 billion cards. That's around 2 million of each card in the 700 card first series. Now we know they couldn't keep up with demand and continued printing. For argument's sake, let's say they doubled the initial print run and made 4 million of each card (2.8 billion total cards printed). One source inside the industry claimed that 81 billion trading cards were printed by the late '80s and early 90's.

Maybe someone else can estimate the market share of each sport in 1990. But say Topps printed 1/4 of the 81 billion trading cards printed. That's 20 billion trading cards in 1990. Let's then say that the breakdown was 40% baseball cards, 25% football and 25% hockey and 10% non-sports. That's 8 billion baseball cards. Say Topps base was 80% of that. 6.6 billion cards of a 792 card set would be a print run of 8.3 million of each card. Personally I feel that is a conservative estimate and wouldn't be surprised if the print run of each base card of 1990 Topps baseball was 15 million.

Looking at the current unopened market, it does appear to me that 1990 Topps is at least 2-3 times more plentiful than 1989 Upper Deck.

@West - That is what I'm talking about! Love that post - gives a lot to think about for estimates

Was that claim of 80b+ trading cards supposedly an annual figure?

If a set has any numbered inserts, and stated odds, you can figure out approximate numbers for everything else.

It does get complicated once the companies started doing different odds for different products and different inserts for different packaging/retail exclusives, but a rough figure is possible.

Other years it may be possible to get a very approximate figure by figuring out what each card wholesaled for and if the annual report includes a breakdown of how much in sales was Baseball cards. But only a very rough estimate, since the per card price was very different between wax/cellos/racks/vending.

It was an annual figure. I've seen it reported in several places, here is one link:

https://slate.com/culture/2010/03/th...rd-bubble.html

"Unfortunately for investors, each one of those cards was being printed in astronomical numbers. The card companies were shrewd enough never to disclose how many cards they were actually producing, but even conservative estimates put the number well into the billions. One trade magazine estimated the tally at 81 billion trading cards per year in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, or more than 300 cards for every American annually. "

I'm not sure what trade magazine the original estimate came from. Could we posit that Topps produced as much as 40% of that 81 billion? I know there was a ton of Fleer, Donruss and Score out there, but Topps had been the industry leader for decades and Upper Deck was just getting on its feet. Some kind of market share data (or an annual report, as Steve B mentioned) from that era would get a better estimate.

Since Topps became publicly traded I was able to download annual reports from as far back as 1995. But the junk wax era reports are not available as Topps was privately held at that time and employees and subcontractors all had strict non-disclosure stipulations in their contracts.

Very few, if any employees remain from the pre-1995 era. Some undoubtedly have passed away. I've reached out to several folks who were involved with the industry. I was only able to get one person to respond.

This is the most helpful article I've found in which a former employee has gone on the record about information that was not publicly available at the time.

https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...hn-tassoni-jr/

I'm not aware of any other articles that go behind the scenes of production, besides a Topps Magazine piece from 1991 that was more of a publicity piece. I shared that article in a different thread.

Take this info for what its worth but its from some research I did awhile back.

1975 Topps: 380,000 sets (Source: Beckett 3 estimate published 1981)
1979 Topps: 315,000 sets (Source: Beckett 3 estimate published 1981)
1991 Donruss: 5mm sets (Estimate from extrapolating from print run of Elite, average number of cases for the hit)
1992 Donruss: 5mm sets (see above)

I have several friends and a few relatives that worked for Score for years. They all cared about cards as much as most of us care about playing with Barbie dolls.

Even when working there they knew little to nothing about anything but the crappy job they done. Now about the only thing most remember is Score gave them those "damn worthless" cards instead of bonuses for Christmas(holidays).

If I recall correctly, Donruss in its advertising for the 1992 set claimed that it was scaling back production to 1985 levels, so I am pretty sure there is less 1992 Donruss out there than there was for the years immediately preceding it.

That would be interesting if we could find a source for that because I'd actually calculated a bunch of the junk wax years based off 1992 Donruss. I think that print figure of 2m/card is going to be fairly accurate because can back into it from Elite. Odds were never stated but a lot of empirical evidence of around 1:1.5x per case

Would mean even higher numbers for 1989-1991

Donruss and Leaf cut back stating with the year 1994. I'll post shortly with their releases.

Here's some more numbers based on Donruss/Leaf Media releases ( see scans):

1994 Donruss Series 1 : < 17,500/20 box cases = < 350,000 boxes
1994 Donruss Series 2 : < 17,500/20 box cases = < 350,000 boxes
1994 Leaf Series 1 : < 19,000/20 box cases = < 380,000 boxes
1994 Leaf Series 2 : < 19,000/20 box cases = < 380,000 boxes

The Leaf production was decreased by 25% from the previous year , therefore:
1993 Leaf Series 1 : around 25,000/20 box cases = around 500,000 boxes
1993 Leaf Series 2 : around 25,000/20 box cases = around 500,000 boxes

Note: 1994 Donruss production was the lowest since 1985 Donruss. So 1986-1993 Donruss had higher production.

1991 Donruss: 5mm sets (Estimate from extrapolating from print run of Elite, average number of cases for the hit)
1992 Donruss: 5mm sets (see above)
Hadn't seen this comment, but tried to incorporate into ranges. I'd calculated closer to 2m sets for 1992 Donruss extrapolated from the Elite print run - although have read 1992 production was reduced from prior years

The 2 million estimate is essentially equivalent to 1:1.5x case odds for Elite (excl. legend/signature series)
1 case = 20 boxes
1 box = 36 packs
1 pack = 15 cards

1 case = 20 boxes = 720 packs = 10,800 cards
1 Elite = 1.5x case odds = 16,200
10x Player Elite Set /10,000 = 100,000 Elite Cards = ~1.6b cards
792-card set (including Series 2 "bonus cards") = /2,000,000+ per card

1994 Studio : Total 8,000/20 box cases = 160,000 boxes
6,000 Hobby and 2,000 Retail

35% reduction from 1993 Studio

1993 Studio : Estimated 12,500 /20 box cases = 250,000 boxes

It all depends on the odds for the Elite, this article claims 1 Elite for every 75 boxes, which I think is closer to the truth. I didn't keep the worksheet for the math but I think this article is what I based it on. I guess you have to figure in the number of factory sets also, which I guestimate at about 100k-200k. https://baseballcardpedia.nfshost.co...sertion_Ratios

The article on 1992 Donruss at Baseballcardpedia notes that it is believed that Elite came 1:55 boxes, which jibes with the lower production runs claimed.

Another thing to think about is were there retail returns and how many? Were a large amount of the returns destroyed? Cases of this stuff was available in the mid-late 90's for $20 in any kind of quantity. We'll never know exactly.

Odds were never stated, but odds of 1:55 boxes would be close to 1:2000 packs. Take almost 3 cases per Elite? I've never pulled one, so just guessing, but that seems higher than observed odds from most people who have done multiple case breaks, etc.

Agree that there are a lot of variables. The factory sets is something I hadn't thought much about. Bigger question for me is how much has been "consumed" by kids / the hobby over the past 25-30 years. For instance, I know that I threw away almost all of my base cards from the late 1980s-1990s after my parents sold their house - and very few of them were in gem mint condition anyway. I'd imagine a huge number of cards have had similar fate - although not enough to make a big enough dent in production figures

Who knows ultimately. It's my opinion that the BaseballCardPedia numbers are pretty close. Problem with case breaks is that you would have to break 50-100 cases to even get an educated guess on the ratio of Elite.

Anyway I reran the numbers based on the BaseballCardPedia numbers. In 1991 you would effectively get 55 sets per Elite, in 1992 I guessed about 35-40 per Elite.

That gave me a number close to 5mm of each 1991 and 4.2mm of each 1992. There are a lot of variables I don't know, like rack packs, cello packs, factory sets, etc, but it sounds right that 1992 Donruss have a lower (but still ridiculously high) print run than 1991.

I love the Silver and Gold stars series. Traded for a silver Juan Gonzalez - was my first ever "serial numbered" card

Yeah, its possible I'm remembering that wrong and getting it mixed up with another set.

This is going to bother me though as I definitely remember reading an ad (probably in one of the major hobby publications) in 1992 claiming that a set that year was being limited to 1985 production levels. Maybe it was Leaf or Fleer, I bought a lot of packs of them that year too.

That kind of makes sense, but I stopped collecting in 1993 and am sure it was for a set from before that year.

Just looking at this entry from baseballcardpedia it does state that Donruss reduced production in 1992:

http://baseballcardpedia.com/index.php/Donruss

"In 1992, with sales of standard card lines plunging in the face of more attractive higher-end versions, Donruss announced that it was severely curtailing its production and doubling their flagship set's retail price to 99 cents a pack."

They don't give a source for that so I don't know what that statement is based on, but it does jive with my memory. I bet if anyone has any old hobby publications around from 1992, or maybe some Donruss promotional stuff from that year (I worked in a card shop at the time and we used to get that stuff) they might find something with an announcement like that.

Production numbers were high for most products from 1986-1991. I think 1991 had to be the highest. As Score was introduced in 1988 and Upper Deck in 1989 etc. I think Topps-Fleer-Donruss tried to take up all the shelf space and dealers money. I'm sure production was lower in 1992 and really went down in 1994 and 1995 because of the baseball strike and no World Series 1994. I'll try to find the 1992 Donruss news release.

For the "In 1992, Donruss printed fewer cards than in any year since 1987" - how do you interpret that in terms of base set production vs. extended specialty / traded / oddball sets like "The Rookies" which it mentions in the next bullet. Trying to square that language with the 1994 media statement "total quantity of Donruss cards produced in the 1994 Production Year is less than [...] 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 Production Years [...] even after excluding specialty sets [...]" - which also included a case count for each series (17,500) for the first time ever.

For 1992, sounds like just started to roll some of the specialty sets into base card production, probably in order to keep that production up so total quantity of all card sets in 1992 combined was (higher than 1987) less than 1988... but doesn't say much more than that. 1994 statement is more specific saying that total 1994 production of base and specialty sets was lower than just base production of the preceding years

Also makes it sound like 1984 Donruss may have been a cut from 1983 Production?

I had already included a 20% reduction from 1991 Donruss --> 1992 Donruss and then a fairly big drop in 1994 in the estimates. Sounds like 1991 may have been the peak for base card production..

Got an interesting lead off an old thread on another board. In the early 80's wax and cello packs had a contest card which told both how many prizes and the odds. Off of that you can extrapolate out some figures that will give some idea of the relationship in print runs over the years.

1981 Topps: (Wax Only) 3,012,050 prizes, 1:17 packs x 15 cards-pack/792 cards* 970,000 sets in wax

1982 Topps: No contest

1983 Topps: (Wax/Cello) 285,000 prizes, 1:140 packs x19cards-pack /792 cards 957,196 sets

1984 Topps (Wax/Cello) 20,000 batting gloves, 1:2,700 packs x19cards-pack 1,295,000 sets

1985 Topps (Wax/Cello) 2,000 fielding gloves, 1:25,000 packsx19cards-pack 1,200,000 sets

1986-1991 Topps Contest had no odds, based on sent-in entries

1992 Topps (All Packs) 6 grand prizes, 1:41,666,667 packsx21cards-pack 6,628,000 sets(!!!)

*- though there were only 726 cards in the set, 66 were double printed.

Where the contest cards came in multiple pack types I estimated the amount of cards per pack across the print run. My presumption was that wax is the great majority of the print run versus cello (and rack, etc for 1992).

This leaves out rack packs, vending boxes, and factory sets for the years they were produced. But it does give a starting point. If you held a gun to my head I'd add 25% to the 1981-83 print runs, and maybe 40% to the 1984-85 for the other packaging.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1993 Stadium Club: 1st Day Production: 2,000 sets 1:24 packsx14cards-pack 100,000 sets

I would love to know the Leaf print runs in the mid 80s. The pop report for an 87 Bo Jackson and 87 Barry Bonds in PSA 10 are only in the 90s.

In contrast, their 87 Topps Tiffany PSA 10s are in the 300s.

A question about the 1993 Finest Refractors - the PSA pop shows 282 for the Frank Thomas Refractor (#102) alone - could there be that many re-submissions? And would that many of them have been submitted?

EDIT - looks like there was a 2015 thread concerning this with crossovers and mislabels considered the most likely explanation.

The number cited in 1993 for the Finest Refractors are 241 each, which came 1:9 packs if I remember correctly.

No hard numbers to add to the thread, but I can give some memories that should provide a check on some of the trends.

1984 Donruss were advertised to be produced in lower numbers than the previous years. This 'scarcity' increased demand and they were harder to find in 1984 than Topps or Fleer. This seems to be reflected in your Donruss print runs numbers. After 1984, Donruss went back up in production, flooding the market by the late 80s.

For Fleer, production (supposedly) took a dip in 1988 after steady increases in the previous years.

Topps, well, they kept the presses running 24/7 all through the '80s, until they literally used all the cardboard in the western hemisphere in 1987.

Upper Deck's first print run in 1989 was initially thought to be 'limited', but like an Artesian well, they kept showing up on shelves. I have heard that they even specifically printed sheets of Griffey that year to make sure every living person on earth had a GJr RC.

All hearsay, I know.

IIRC the Finest Refractors were 1:24 (one per box) 1:9 would have increased the print run significantly

Ref: 1993 Topps Finest . Here's the numbers: 4,000 ( 12 box ) cases were produced = 48,000 boxes . These were 18ct boxes. Packs contained 6 cards ( five cards + one of the All-Star Cards ( # 84-116)
Odds of refractors were :1:9 packs or 2 per box or a total of 96,000 refractors /199 cards in the set = 482 each . Not sure why or where the 241 has been listed for years, the numbers indicate double that amonut at 482.

Total : 864,000 packs= 4,320,00 cards ( 26,024 of 166 of the cards in the set, and 26,182 of the 33 All-Star Cards (#84-116). About equal. Subtract the 482 each for refractors and you get about 25,500 of each.

5" x 7" Jumbo Cards ( 1 per box) = 48,000 Total. Only issued for the 33 card
All-Star cards. But one of 6 was with Special Foil. Therefore 40,000 were regular foil and 8,000 were Special enhanced Foil. Therefore 40,000/33 =1212 of each regular foil All-Star Jumbo and 8,000/33 = 242 of the Jumbo Special Enhanced Foil cards. NOTE: Maybe this is where that 241 number came up. It was with the Jumbo Refractors not the regular card Refractors. Are jumbo Refractors graded ??

Appreciate all the replies!

Haven't been able to focus on this for a little bit, but just added/updated a whole bunch of sets to the list. If anyone sees any sets where they can add info - don't be nervous to jump in. If anyone has sets you'd like to see added (for instance just added some of the early Upper Deck and Zenith) feel free to say that as well. Next step is hoping to add a bunch of misc. oddball sets

Kept the 1993 Finest Refractor at /241 for now, but have noticed the issue with that one as a non-numbered set for a long time. I'll revisit it later

Some detective work from Net54 member Zach Wheat regarding 1991 Topps and Desert Shield -

"The Feb 4, 1991 issue of The Pittsburgh Gazette indicates that "...the Topps cards were issued 2 Months prior..." (so Dec 1990) and that Topps had actually planned the shipment before the war (ie Desert Storm)
began. Timing dictated that Operation Desert Shield was over almost as soon as the cards arrived. In an article in the Myrtle Beach Air Star News, Topps spokesman Timm Boyle again mentions that approximately 5,400,00 cards were produced and that the entire allotment meant for the Air Force was returned to the base at Myrtle Beach unopened. This shipment accounted for approx. 1,500,000 cards. Boyle also mentioned that the production run was approx. 6,800 for each player (my math) or approx. 1/1,000th that of normal production."

If those quoted numbers are accurate, 5.4 million cards*1000 = total press run for 1991 Topps of 5.4 billion cards. 5.4 million / 792 = 6.8 million/card in 1991.

That seems plausible to me. We have found statements from Topps representatives in the early 1990s that were possibly exaggerations or outright falsehood. When they were engaged in a lawsuit concerning a George Bush card that made its way into hobby circulation, Topps claimed that all 1990 cards were printed at Duryea when we have evidence that they were subcontracted out to a plant in Rhode Island. It may seem like semantics but I wouldn't put it past them to underestimate total press run so as to make their cards look (a little) more scarce.

Great find! I bumped some of the estimates up for Topps during the junkwax years, although not quite to the 4-5m+ level yet. Going to look into it some more

Added another round of sets to the list.

A bunch of Topps oddball stuff including all the Topps Gallery of Champions sets & related Bronze/Pewter Dealer Premiums. Fascinating to see how these were listed/merged in the old SCD since it was its own 12-card set, a pewter premium related to purchases of Topps Tiffany (?) cases, and a Bronze premium related to sales of Topps Traded (?) cases. I know there a bunch of former dealers on here... would be interested to hear if anyone still collects these? Or even just the sales tiers needed to qualify for the premiums in order to estimate production numbers?

I also added some of the early Stadium Club years and a bookmark for each of the artists in the Topps 2020 Project, which I'm sure there are some people paying attention.

Added various "chase cards" from the 90s like Upper Deck Heroes and some misc. manufacturers like Action Packed

Hope everyone had a great MDW. Any input on production numbers or just any thoughts on how to improve the list and/or make it more useful are appreciated

Slowed down on this but going to add those sets to the list so I remember to come back to it
I saw someone post this in a FB comment. It’s not verified but at least something to go off of for 87 Leaf:

“I was looking to see what a 1987 Leaf case looked like, but all I could find was a 10 box case with 8 regular boxes and 2 Leaf boxes. Does anyone know if this is the only way they came? If so, that’s a 1:4 Leaf / Donruss ratio just in those cases alone. Then you have regular 20 box cases of Donruss on top of that. If you do a 10 box mixed for every 20 box regular then you are at a 1:15 ratio without taking in to account Racks and Cellos. If the ratio of 1:15 is close, which I think it is more like 1:50, then Leaf boxes are very undervalued in the current market.”

The ratio of submissions to PSA is 1:11.9. 9,222 Leaf vs 110,089 Donruss.

The Donruss numbers are off. I uncovered some Donruss internal sales documents from 1990 and they talked about the sales figures and growth from year-to-year throughout the decade. While these aren't actual production numbers, I think it's safe to infer that as sales increased dramatically, so did production.

Despite popular hobby sentiment, 1984 Donruss was not short printed. It was Donruss' most successful year to date and, in fact, they did so well that they decided to branch out and enter the Canadian market. From 1985 onward, sales virtually doubled every year.

If Donruss was doing this well, Topps must have been cleaning up because they had a much larger market share.

I know I saved a copy of these documents. There's virtually no way I would have come across such things and not made some kind of digital copy for my files. It's just a matter of me finding them.
