I forgot how awesome "Stars" was. Dio, Halford, Tate. The 3 best voices in all of metal, then and still. Malmsteen, Lynch, Campbell - tough to find better players in the 80's. Very cool!

Agree with you on Halford and Tate, but there's a few I'd put ahead of Dio, in no particular order:

Brian Johnson
Dave Mustaine
Bruce Dickinson
Ozzy
James Hetfield
Ian Gillan
David Wayne (Metal Church)
Lemmy
Rob Zombie

and I may get criticized for these two but:
Axl Rose
Sebastian Bach

Then
Dio (although awfully powerful for a 5 footer)

Dio was good on records, but the time I saw him live he wasn't all that good.
I'd thought the performance filmed for "Black and Blue" might have just been a bad night, but no.

Of the guitar players I've seen, Malmsteen…. not even top 10. People like him, but again, just unimpressive in concert.

How is it even possible to have a list of Metal singers "even in no particular order" that has Brian Johnson BUT NO BON SCOTT??? Johnson is a solid vocalist but his best work ( Back in Black) was a tribute album to Bon Scott. And his job from day one with AC/DC was to Mimic Bon. Now you might say many are too young to have heard Bon. But I am pretty sure Every person reading this thread has listed to Highway to Hell (the Album not the single) many many times.

Bon Scott...not just great but so distinctive. Two words into any song you know it is him.

No love for Glenn Hughes? I guess it's an era thing as I was a teenager in the late 1970s-early 1980s so the formative years bands for me were Zeppelin, AC/DC, Van Halen (gods in the San Fernando Valley area while I was in high school in North Hollywood 40 or so years ago), Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc. Classics, you might say.

FWIW, which ain't much, I think Eddie Vedder has one of the great rock voices.

I don't recall if she'e been mentioned yet, but Joan Jett is awesome. I saw her at the Hollywood Bowl last summer and she rocked. I'm more of a punk than metal fan, though I was into the early metal bands until punk and related genres (except hardcore...yech) came on. I kinda dropped out of it in the mid-eighties, so the 'hair bands' are mostly unknown to me. Learning a lot in this thread.

No, that's incorrect.

Deep Purple...not The Village People.

I didn't put Bon on because he was dead at the time Stars was done.

But yes of course he'd be on the All Time list.

Sorry All, I was referring to who they could have had better then Dio for the Stars album. I'd dig Bon myself up if I could. Definitely was the most distinctive and in the Top 3 for sure.

.....and to the above list, my error on Rob Zombie, not a particularly great voice, as probably can be said of Lemmy, but just love how they sound.

And my one big omission, and Winner of the Best Scream hands down.....TOM ARAYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

That is what is wonderful about music... the varied selection even within each genre. I personally was shocked to find that ANYONE in this thread enjoys listening to George Thorogood

The most iconic voices in hard rock belong to Ozzy (without Black Sabbath, there is no heavy metal), Scott (so identifiable), Halford (greatest range and arguably best band) and Dickinson (no greater songs were ever written about English history/culture... well maybe by Led Zeppelin). This is just my oh so humble opinion.

Startin' a fight

Better than Ronnie?...
Johnson - not a chance. Bon Scott way better.
Mustaine - Megadeth is my FAVORITE band of all time but Dave's not better (close).
Dickinson - 3rd favorite band of all time, as good, not better (close again).
Ozzy - LOVE Black Sabbath/Ozzy, not even close talent wise.
Hetfield - no way.
Gillan - that's just silly.
Wayne - not in the same universe much less planet.
Lemmy - second favorite band, nope.
Zombie - closer to worse than best.
Rose - talented, not in the same league.
Bach - seriously one of the best metal singers, unbelievable range, but not Dio.

Hope that clears that up!
