If I had to pick one it would be:

Collective Soul - 'She Said'

You cannot have this conversation without mentioning:

Mason Williams - 'Classical Gas'

I would also consider

ELO - 'Fire on High', 'Turn to Stone', 'Mr. Blue Sky'
Collective Soul - 'Run'

The words to 'Run' are very apropos to our current chaos:

Are these times contagious
I've never been this bored before
Is this the prize I've waited for
Now as the hours passing
There's nothing left here to insure
I long to find the messenger.

Is there a cure among us?
From this processed sanity?
I weaken with each voice that sings
In this world of purchase
I'm gonna buy back memories
To awaken some old qualities

We'll endorse Michael's nomination of ELO.
Also, Moody Blues, "Nights in White Satin" and the entire Days of Future Passed album.
But especially Elton John's early material with those fantastic Paul Buckmaster string arrangements --
"Your Song," "Madman Across the Water," "Levon," "Burn Down the Mission," many more...

I have to add another one that popped into my head as I was out on a 4½ mile walk at 5 am in 30º weather - Great to be alive.

Procol Harum w/ the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra - Conquistador

"The Rain Song" by Zeppelin, although in reality the 'orchestra' was simulated by Page, et al.

From wikipedia: "With a working title of "Slush", a reference to its easy listening simulated orchestral arrangement..."

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is best known for their Christmas albums. All filled with classical music, 'The Christmas Attic' is my favorite. I have a rule that they can only be listened to from the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas.

However, their rock opera 'Beethoven's Last Night' is a fictitious story of Mephistopheles coming to collect his soul the night before he died. He was working on his 10th symphony which went unfinished. As with all of their albums it is filled with classical music. Not just Beethoven, but also Mozart, Chopin and Rimsky-Korsakov.

I don't think mentioned yet:

Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve

Yesterday - Beatles (only a string quartet, but...)

This is a video, but Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) doing "Whiter Shade of Pale" with a full orchestra. It's freakin' good.

I don't think Renaissance has gotten any love yet, but their orchestral music is worth a listen. Plus Annie Haslam's voice is a thing of beauty

Knights in White Satin and November Rain are fantastic songs mentioned above. So are the mentions of EL as in ELO and ELton John.

Was just thinking that even though Ian Anderson is well know for playing the flute, Jethro Tull may not have a famous song that could qualify for this topic.

WOW, this version was so good, as you previewed!!
This could have been a big hit even in 2006 ,I was astounded on how good a voice he still has, and the musical accompaniment hit on all cylinders!

I loved Heart's Cover of Stairway to Heaven, at the Kennedy Center.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFxOaDeJmXk

Anything that Jeff Lynne has touched with ELO. If I had to give specifics, turn to stone, and telephone line are wonderful.

For something a little less traditional, Tommy Shaw of Styx performed Renegade, accompanied by an Orchestra

I came here to mention the S&M album by Metallica, but some someone else already mentioned it, I'll go with "Hallelujah" by k.d. lang.

I had to comment on this because 1) Nightwish is symphonic metal and 2) Endless Forms Most Beautiful is a reference to Charles Darwin.

I used to participate on the Panda's Thumb forum, a discussion board not unlike net54,but dedicated to the science of evolution and the associated culture wars. One of the people I encountered there, and remains an internet friend to this day, is the founder/main composer/keyboardist of the French symphonic metal band, Fairyland. I've heard that they are very similar to Nightwish.
