Default March Pickups

Starting off March with an underrated (and historically significant) Hall of Famer. Glad to add his RC to my collection.

Nice Doby.

I picked this up at my LCS yesterday, so techincally a February pickup, but we've got a new thread so what the hey. 1956T Warren Spahn in NM condition (except for a little tape). The scan would have come out better if I took the card out of the screwdown, but that lucite was part of the excellent deal.

Default Pick Up

Really happy to have landed the Mantle...works great with my 1952 Topps set. Presents very well for a PSA 1 in my opinion. Thanks guys.

Wow, heck of a start to March...

Great Mantle and John those two 67's are on my short list right now! Great cards! (JEALOUS)

Down to only needing 10 cards for my 1964 Topps set...got these two in the mail today (with a couple of high number RC cards). The Mantle is a little OC but sharp corners and is an upgrade. 10 more!

The Larry Doby is amazing as well...I love the couple of cards I have of his...classics!

Love seeing the '67s keep coming in. Such a great looking set, John. And that's a really nice Reggie, Ed!

This arrived today. I've never been a huge fan of the 52 Bowman set, but I think this card has terrific art. Looks more like the '51 set, IMO. Minnie Minoso rookie card, and under $70.

The "54" off to another strong start, keep them coming guys. Nice looking Minny there Sir. Picked up this 1952 Berk Ross Willie Mays last week. Trying to get some early cards of his before they`re just too far out of reach.

Default 56T Reese

Has anyone else noticed that post-war cards have become pricey? Every time I bid on a Jackie Robinson or Willie Mays card, I'm like the 27th under-bidder. Here's a Reese, one of the few cards I've won on eBay in the last couple of months.

Yes. The big names from the 50's have exploded much like certain prewar did. And perhaps nobody moreso than Jackie Robinson. I'm astounded at the prices you see '55 and '56 Topps Robinson cards going for recently. Not too long ago, you could get a lower grade '56 Topps Jackie for less than $100. That ship has sailed. Aaron, Mays, and Clemente all are not far behind. Aaron's death in addition to having an effect on his own cards seems to have woke many up to the relative undervaluing of Mays stuff, as well. His '52 Topps card was perhaps not criminally undervalued before, but it was close.

Default 1956 Topps

I picked up a 56T Berra and Robinson in 2016. The Robinson is an sgc 86 and I paid $406 including the BP. A Robinson SGC 86 just sold for $3827. The Berra is worth about 20% more than I paid...I want to buy a 52T Mays, but I just can't hit the buy button at today's prices.

You can save a copy on your desktop, or a pic on your phone, then use the attachment function (paperclip thumbnail) to add a picture.

No luck, it wants a url. Other sites it goes to your saved photos, here is more difficult

Not exactly new pickups, but I haven't seen these since I sent them off to PSA in July.

Happy to have these four hall of famers back

Thank you! It's my only '52 Topps, and I'm glad to have it.

I love the write-up on the back as well. It captures exactly how well he showed up on the biggest stage when he finally got the chance. Legend.

No kidding. Led the league in RBI and batted .458 in the WS as a 32-year-old 2nd year player! Have you picked up a Doby yet?

Thanks, Matthew, I'm glad I managed to win the Reese. I agree that the 52 Doby is a nice card. I have a low grade example and need to upgrade. Here was a nice one that I was thinking about bidding on the other day. Other than the border chip, it was a blazer.

Great pickups everyone. Love looking at people's purchases/trades. I got this today at my LCS out of a $1 box. Didn't know anything about it, but I knew it looked old (they had other teams as well like Yankees, Reds, Red Sox, etc, but this is the only one I picked up).

Anyway, I think it's a 1961 Fleer Double Bubble, although Beckett doesn't list that brand when typing in 1961 Fleer. So not sure. But still a cool find, especially for $1.

Speaking of early integrators, these three have arrived in the past few days. The Paige speaks for itself, of course, but let's focus on the Doby and the Irvin for a minute. Such beautiful cards. Irvin has that classic early/mid-20th century follow-through pose from when hitters were taught to "swing down on the ball" and lunge out onto their front foot. A lot of Goudeys and earlier cards have that same pose.

The Doby...what amazing, vivid colors. It's odd, because Topps apparently kept the Cleveland color scheme and cap in the head shot, while the background shot and the team designation reflected his trade to the White Sox. The card is definitely better for it, though - the red and blue add so much.

My recent plan is to purchase nice raw Mantle and save them for a 'rainy day'- at which time, I would hope to get them graded accurately and resell them for a profit.

These first four are still in transit:

These two have arrived:

This is what I’m talking about. Awesome cards!

Really nice centering on the ‘61. Tough card to find like that.

I made a few recent raw purchases of players who started in the NL and eventually made the MLB. One of my favorites- and one of the coolest cards I've never seen- was this '51 Bowman Sam Jethroe. The stance, the colors... the art is great. I know Sam was a switch hitter, but his hands are holding the bat "backwards" on this card. Anyone seen the original photo this is from (or any photo of him batting right-handed)? I know when batting lefty he held the bat normally. Unless this is supposed to be the follow-thru from a lefthanded swing? Hmm...
