Nice pickups! It’s always fun finding a stash of pennants like this! If you’re wanting to offload the go big red, let me know

Love that Go Big Red pennant. I've not seen that before. Any insights about its age and maker?

Cool pennants Dan...

Although generic in nature, that is a rare Dodgers pennant. Have seen many that are similar in style, but not exactly like it. Nice grouping with no two having a thing in common!

The trouble with pennants like that is it could well have been issued for Nebraska or Oklahoma or Cornell football.

Yep, it’s a Husker pennant. I collect old Husker stuff too.

Probably circa 1960. Not sure who made it. Found right here in Lincoln though so almost surely a Husker pennant.

I have the photo, but not the cover with teams names that goes over the photo and attaches to the pennant itself.

Not authentic of course - the MLB stamp dates it around 1980 and it is thin paper felt - but I guess close enough that a non-collector seller wouldn’t know. Although I believe this is pictured in the pennant guide. … I only know of four vintage Pilots: two red Trench, one white ASCO, one red Ad Flag.

Default Help with pennants

Hey guys, really new to anything pennants. Just picked these up and was wondering what kind of values they would have. Thanks Marc

Hi Marc, welcome … nice batch. I think Cardinals, Pirates, Phillies are each in the $40-75 range. (Thinking in terms of eBay auctions.) The Braves with player names, Cubs, and Reds (my favorite) would be higher maybe even close to $150-200 each at the right time.

I agree with Greg's estimates... spot on. The Reds is a rare version, and the Cubs is semi-rare. The Braves is pretty common, but is a championship pennant with players' names.

The other three are nice pennants, but are readily available. Great pickups!

Thank you! I thought the braves one was odd, being that they did not win the World Series that year. Appreciate you guys taking the time to look at them.

The Braves pennant is a ‘phantom’ pennant because they didn’t win the World Series that year, but it isn’t as rare as one would think. It’s still cool as hell!

Two recent pickups, neither broke the bank. 1960 ASG pennant from the unknown NY area company and WGN Athletics. I had only seen the latter before in a pic online, slight variation from the one I already had. This went with a batch of non sports pennants and was auctioned earlier (I underbid) but winner didn’t pay and they were re-auctioned.

Very Nice

Really like the ASG pennant

Both look like they are in great shape

That's Athletics pennant looks really sharp. Is this the other variant that you're referring to? I love that they have graphics in the middle and the end of the pennant.

Yes! That’s actually mine, displayed on my pool table. These WGNs are so cool. So now we know that they made pennants with tassels in the 40s, these are early 50s. Still looking for the Cardinals, once I get it I can die in peace.

I don’t own this Browns pennant but it is another rare WGN variation.

So which do you think is more likely: a Cardinals version was never made, or, it is so rare it almost never surfaces?

I’ve seen the Cardinals, twice. Once long, long ago and about three years ago but in very poor condition. ‘St. Louis’ looks exactly as it does on the Browns pennant, with a bird logo and ‘Cards’ underneath.

These are all pretty rare, the Cubs and White Sox being most common by comparison - still rare - although (as you know) they have the most variations (likely due to location) including multi color. Red Sox and Senators both have two versions.

Did you (Mike) get that ‘45 Cubs pennant? It was stunning…

No, I have it in green so didn’t go all out. It’s certainly the best one condition wise I have seen.

Anyone see that Christy Mathewson pennant up for auction on Heritage. The pictures are up and the auction starts next week

Very nice looking.

Hopefully someone from this forum wins it for their collection.

Default W.C. Kern Co., Chicago, IL

Wow, great find Jason. Thanks for sharing.

I was familiar with this particular maker (W.C. Kern Co.); but, never knew them to have made anything but souvenir and collegiate pennants.

I guess they made professional baseball pennants!

Here's some of their labels in use around the turn of the past century. I'm curious if any of the Cubs pennants featured in the ad bore any of these....

Nice find. Wonder if they had a catalog showing their entire inventory?

I think Kyle has a decent collection of old pennant brochures. Cool stuff, as well as great reference material.

OT - along the same lines, I would love to find an old ad for the "weirdo" bobbing heads.

They most certainly did issue a sales catalogue! See the below ad for W.C. Kern, published in 1903 (1903!).

All of these companies regularly issued catalogues back in those days. Typically, you had to write to the company and request one; then they'd mail you one ... and another the next year, and so on and so forth.... Most were printed in black and white; but some featured color imagery. Most were a dozen or so pages in length; but, some, especially the bigger flag makers and/or sporting goods companies, would issue sales books totaling a few hundred pages. The prices were always wholesale, with the unit price diminishing on every additional dozen pennants ordered.

Unfortunately, I don't own a W.C. Kern catalogue; nor have I ever seen one. But perhaps one day....

In addition to the below 1903 ad, here's two more from W.C. Kern from 1905, and 1909. Note that none mention anything about professional baseball pennants.

Default Trench Mini Football Pennants in Original Packaging

Here’s something you don’t see everyday; two sets of Trench mini pennants in original packaging, one AFC and one NFC. Measures about 20”x12”. I couldn’t resist.

Default Trench pennants

It would have to be between 1971 and 75.

I would hate to see the cheaters win. Braves all the way.

Although I collect Houston items, I don't care all that much.

I just want to post this pennant, which is one of my all time favorites (Thanks, Mark!)

Chris, fairly tough. I guess you see a few of these each year. I personally like the 1961 picture pennants, this was before they used the ribbon insert and displayed the year under the pic. Looks clean and should display nicely.
