Default Salad Bars and what else is not coming back

There have been a lot of changes in the last few years. One thing I greatly missed is salad bars in grocery stores. I had thought post pandemic they would return, but all the ones by me were ripped out and replaced with fruit displays. Sad for sure.

What are some things you miss but know are not coming back?

Cheaper prices in the Hobby...... oh you mean society wise?

I miss video stores, fun place to gather with the family, to pick out a movie. Bowling Alley's, as many of the ones near me have shut down, again another cheap night out, that was fun. Batting Cages in a similar vein, the ones near me have shut down.

On a more personal level, I miss the feeling of not always being connected to the world. People used to make plans, and just straight up honor them. We'd agree upon a time and a place to meet, and you would, just meet there. This has been long gone, not because of Covid, but still.

Not necessarily things that aren't coming back, but things that will change.

Businesses of all sizes not holding much inventory.

Especially smaller places.
There used to be a fair number of small bicycle shops that were more boutiques than anything else. They had their niche, and did it in shop spaces that were often very small. They seldom had a lot of anything in stock, and what they had was all very upper end type stuff. Like maybe 5 bikes all at around 10K, and a handful of the pricy parts that go on them.

With the supply chain problems, they quickly ran out of stuff to sell, and ran out of parts to service the bikes. Nearly all of them are already gone.

Far worse than the card shops washing out because the 94-5 strike pushed the ones without cash reserves that were poorly run over the edge.

Hopefully, if it ever was a thing, real, unbiased news makes a return.

There are plenty of these still around (including one that currently lives on Pennsylvania Avenue), but they do seem to be a dying breed.

Not to get too political but it seems that social media, and the idea behind publishing every facet of your life to the world, has completely ruined this. It's terrible on both sides of the aisle. The ones that appear to be the loudest, and heard by the most people, are just the biggest blowhards out there. That seems to go for everything nowadays. Wish more people would subscribe to the "speak softly" mantra that many used to abide by.

On a lighter note, True Movie Stars. Maybe because they're from a bygone era, but gone are the days of actors like Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman.

Hell I'll throw another category in there, stars with actual talent. The actors in these musicals Hollywood comes out with now, can't hold a candle to guys like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.

Collaborative office spaces (often seen in Silicon Valley):

An open plan and other design features (e.g., high-traffic staircases) that encourage accidental interactions.
More common areas than are strictly necessary—multiple cafeterias, other places to read and work that encourage workers to leave confined offices.
Emphasis on areas that hold two or more people, rather than single-occupancy offices.
Purpose-free generic “thinking” areas in open-plan spaces, which encourage workers to do their thinking in the presence of other people, rather than alone.

I have a hard time believing anyone is designing office space like this anymore.

I had to don a gilly suit on Christmas Eve, so my neighbors couldn't see me going to my family gathering and report me to the SS.

Belief in expertise rather than belief in beliefs or feelings. Used to be what someone actually knew and could prove was more important than what someone believed about a subject or whether what someone was told matched his politics. Sadly, no more. We've got morons dying from COVID still claiming COVID is a government hoax and that there are nanobots in the vaccines, and still other pinheads equating putting on a mask to go into Costco to what the Nazis did. True American Idiots. And rather than lead from the front and call BS on Boo Boo The Fool, our leaders and media actually tolerate stupid people spouting nonsense from places of pure ignorance because it is their 'right' to do so. It is a right to speak, not a right to be given any credibility and not be called out if what comes out of your cake-hole is just plain dumb.

I also find the cognitive dissonance to be stunning. Who would you rather go to, a board-certified doctor or some random guy from the internet? Who would you rather represent you in court, an attorney or some random guy from facebook? Who is a better choice to design a nuclear reactor, a trained engineer or some guy with a blog? If the former in each case, why take legal, medical or scientific advice from the latter?

And feelings? Yeah, you can shove those; no one cares how you feel about 1+1=2, except maybe the team of therapists who should be assigned to you if you think your feelings matter.
