Hi Peter,
That is a tough question to answer with one name. I consider these 3 skaters to be the most influential: #1 Rodney Mullen, #2 Tony Hawk, #3 Mark Gonzales. That is the Mount Rushmore of skaters and they all have rookie cards too!

Thanks Jeff. Mullen and Hawk are in a 1989 Argentina set as best I can tell? Perhaps you already posted those didn't check back.

Hi Pete. It all depends on what you consider a rookie to be... card, sticker, or postcard. These are the earliest pieces I've found for the big 3:

Rodney Mullen:
1987 Overall (Brazil) #36 Skateboard Album Sticker (First Sticker)
1987 Powell•Peralta Postcard (First Postcard)
1988-89 Cromy (Argentina) #D3 Skateboard Game Card (First Card)

Tony Hawk:
1987 Overall (Brazil) #31 Skateboard Album Sticker Tony Hawk & Lance Mountain (First Sticker)
1987 Overall (Brazil) #35 Skateboard Album Sticker (First Solo Sticker)
1987 Powell•Peralta Postcard (First Postcard)
1988-89 Cromy (Argentina) #A4 Skateboard Game Card (Error, Photo is Tony Hawk and not Lester Kasai)

Mark Gonzales is a lot easier, he only has one true rookie card but it is super tough to find:
1987 Astroboyz Surfing (First Card)

***The 1987 Overall Stickers I own have the backing paper but have been cut from a panel. Panels came like this:
2 small stickers and 1 large sticker OR 2 large stickers OR 1 Extra Large sticker.
Finding an uncut panel with Tony Hawk would blow my mind!

Thanks for that information Jeff. I consider pretty much any collectible to be a rookie card if it's the earliest (I think). These guys really were just kids on their first cards lol.

Did you notice that Mark is rocking the original Jordan Air Force 1's in that photo?

Yep, Gonz rocked Jordan's back then (so did McGill). Posted this sticker a few weeks ago, just hit me that Tony Hawk is the skater in the lower right corner!

Nice list!

I would give Hawk the edge for influence on the sport and his impact on aerial. Mullen very close second as well as the vote for most skilled of all time and Koston in third.

If I took pure skill out and was judging on influence most heavily, it would be hard to leave out Alva. However, there are are hundreds of better skaters.

Can't argue against the Lord Of Dogtown Justin! Here's a few Alva's.

• 1977 Taylorscope Ltd. (Pinback) "Alva Action" (First Button LOL, earliest Alva piece I can find)
• 1983 Lyons Maid Junior Champs (His ONLY Rookie Card)
• 2003 Procore Skateboard Legends Series #01 Sample Card #02 (The only other card that exists for Alva)
• 2013 VANS Promotional Card signed by Tony Alva

This collection is so fun and something that makes me feel like a kid again, I think you just accidentally added competition, lol.

I will be looking for sure!

Please feel free to IM me some auctions if they are for duplicates so I can get a start on without stepping on your toes Jeff.

I can already picture creating awesome groupings like an Animal Chin subset...

Here's my latest and exactly the type of piece I look for! It's a 1988 Powell•Peralta Postcard signed with a note on the back by Ray Barbee!

Here's something really cool I purchased from a professional photographer on ebay. The photographer I purchased this Polaroid from took this photo of Mark Gonzales at a poetry reading on March 7th, 2002 at the Ohio State University Wexner Center.

This Polaroid was signed by Mark Gonzales that same evening and was later published in Issue #12 of Stop Smiling Magazine in 2002!
