Picked these two up in separate sales the last few months, both here on N54. I like miscuts, even cooler when they are extreme and have a star.

Going through my 1971's again, thought I'd resurrect this with a request for data on the Game Cards. For as long as I've been in the hobby, some of the Game inserts have been marked as DP's. The one thing I've learned about football cards is that what the hobby thinks are SP's and DP's are often wrong once we see a sheet. I'd be surprised if Starr and Namath are NOT DP's as they seem extremely abundant, but does anyone have an image of a sheet of the game cards?

I think there is a legitimate stock difference too, which unlike most Topps stock variations is visible on the front. It could be toning, with the sample size I've had in hand I suspect it is not toning.

here you go, top 6 rows same as bottom 6. 53 card set, add another 7 game cards and dupes of Namath, Butkus, Bart Starr, Tom W., Bob Berry and finally Andy Russell

Default Field

Dang that field marker was the WORST thing to find in a pack back in the day!

I love that sheet, THANKS for sharing. As of yet , I don’t have the same obsession for the game cards and posters that I do for the regular sets but I have a few sets. Probably have a dozen extra field markers too LOL.

I know this part is changing the subject of the game card sheet, but since I’m posting anyway…
Update on my 1971 Topps Football set collection:
I collated another 9 partial sets earlier this week.
I have 47 sets underway, 31 complete. And thousands of more cards towards set numbers 48+.
I’m always looking for more. Hit me up if you have any that you have tired of…

9 more sets complete in just one week? Wow. I have ~2,500 or so cards picking up every affordable one I see of my favored guys, but you make my stack look like nada .

Greg …that’s 9 partial sets this week. Collated from a monster box full that I just didn’t have time nor card supplies for previously.

I’ve only got 31 Bradshaw cards. So that is how many are full sets. I still need some more Sayers/Namath/Greene cards to get farther along too.

It may be a sickness. Glad I’m not the only one…
Excuse me while I head over to eBay and look for large lots (again)

That is one amazing hoard. Bradshaw is what keeps me from doing what you’re doing at a lower level. I pick up large common lots when I see them at my price point, and then pick up a bunch of the lower stars I like. It’s not hard to get Brodie, Maynard, Alworth, Bell, Blanda, etc. for $1-$2 for a 3-5 grade card. Butkus and Unitas is only a little more. I think I have the most copies of Brodie. I think Greene and Bradshaw are the only cards I still have just 1 of. Never get tired of this set. I’ve started trying to do a 263 card set of miscuts (has to shown part of another cards photo or text at minimum, the more miscut the better) that should occupy me for a long time.

Default Miscuts

I’ve actually just started pulling out the severe miscuts into a separate pile with the notion of doing exactly what you are suggesting!
How cool is that!

I also only count a MC if it’s pretty serious, enough to recognize the other card.
We are aligned in our ways. I don’t have many miscuts yet but it sounds like a cool diversion while gathering over 100 Jim Butler cards…

I have other ideas on how to expand subsets of this awesome set.
I’ll post them at some point but not tonight 😂

Great minds think alike! I’d love to see your best (worst?) of the miscuts. I’m trying to find a Bradshaw early on.

Found in a small lot of 100ish 71's, 3 pretty out of register commons and another 'purple sky' printing issue. Nice surprise when these worthless but cool defects come in in lots.

Some surprise mail from a board member. Love the misprints, miscuts and other factory mistakes. The upside down wrong back is a centered #108 Dan Sullivan on the front

Default Who me?

Big thanks to Greg for a pair of my favorite card ever… #186 Jim Kiick!
It was just a generous random act of kindness. Two Kiicks in the mail is tough to beat!
So great, great!

I would like to resurrect this thread once again. Is it possible for a cello pack to have both first and second series cards in it? I have a cello pack with Jim Hart on the front and Austin Denney on the back.

Resurrect away, this is a great football set. Don't know about the series of these cards, though

I don’t know either, as I’m too cheap to have cracked any unopened material from this set. I sure would love too though!

I would definitely think it a red flag, Topps typically didn’t mix series (certainly some exception, but atypical). I’ve never heard of 71 series 2 issues (which this would have to be) including series 1 cards as well.

Red Flag to me.
I tend to think this is a wrap job.
Although they were the first cards that I ever collected seriously, I’ve never seen them mixed series.

OK, I probably have more of these cards now that any sane person (32 full sets and 47 partial sets, plus thousands more dupes) and while I did buy a lot of them as a 9 year old, truth is we only had a couple stores that sold them. In my hometown I never saw any 1971 cello boxes at all. But I do recall being able to buy the 1970 cards a year later than they were issued. So the shopkeeper was likely just selling old stock, but I remember the cello boxes of 1970 being in the store at the same time we all were buying wax packs of 1971. Cards were 10 cents for a wax pack and often that was all the money a young boy could scrape up.

I never saw a 1971 cello but that does not mean much. I do remember when it finally occurred to us that some wax packs had different cards in them after weeks/ months of getting doubles. We weren’t smart enough to realize that Topps sold their cards in series. But the next spring/summer we all figured it out while collecting the baseball cards. We almost stopped buying because we kept getting the same cards…until a fresh box would come out and it was terrific fun to see new players!!
That was my first foray into collecting and here I am 50+ years later still doing it!

I didn't notice the different series when I bought it. It was only $20 from a flea market vendor and if it is a re-wrap it was done a while ago because the cellophane seems old.

I’m thinking it’s a legit pack. As mentioned 2nd series wax packs can be found with series 1 cards mixed in. The edges look consistent on all cards and the gum is in the correct place.

This 1971 2nd series cello pack was totally legit and had some first series cards mixed into the middle 8 card section. John

Got another wild miscut in a box of 70's commons. Hopefully it's from a really badly cut sheet in 1971 and not one of the ones made by jackasses in recent years from uncut sheets.
