Default 1993 SP Derek Jeter Advice Wanted

I am a vintage guy so I know almost nothing about modern cards.

I found a couple of boxes of 1993 Upper Deck SP in a closet which I bought new. I opened the cards, put them back in the boxes and dropped them in storage.

I can see at least a two Jeters in the pile but I have not gone through them carefully.

Questions:

1) Is it worth even trying to get them graded?
2) If so, with whom? (my vintage stuff is PSA)
3) Should I consider having someone else submit them for me to increase the chances of a higher grade?

Thoughts?

I'm also a vintage guy so I don't have a ton to say - but my two cents are that if the Jeters are in really good shape, they could be worth grading. Those 1993 SP rookies are notoriously prone to chipping - if they're free from that malady, you could have something good.

Worth grading depending on the condition: yes.
Were they stored in climate controlled rooms or subject to the elements? With the heat/humidity, they could be damaged due to their gloss being uneven.
Do they measure properly at 2.5x3.5?

PSA is probably your best ROI. You can now submit to COMC for cards worth under $499 through COMC at $22 a card, no minimum.

Assuming there are no noticeable defects, PSA is the way to go on the Jeters.

For non-vintage and maximum resale value, PSA is the only choice. Very condition sensitive card and if it looks good its a no-brainer getting graded

For not even seeing a picture of the cards, this thread has some speculative advice.

#1 Yes....possibly but pictures would help.
#2 PSA, BGS, or SGC.
#3 No

Depending on the the look of the cards, PSA is not always the best option. SGC is quite simply the easiest and quickest option. No kids will be born while you wait for your SGC cards to return.

I guess if you enjoy sending your cards and waiting until your 3rd child is born then maybe send them west.

You do know psa offers faster serivce for higher declared value. At even 500 the cards are done in a minimum of 20 days.
Plus, you card won't be cracked out and sold for double within a months time if it is in a PSA holder in the first place.

Sps are odd ducks, many won't pass psa so they go to Beckett and sgc.

Keep in mind in the current grading environment they are likely to get hammered. Would help to see pics.

Several years ago, SGC and BGS were routinely slabbing trimmed SP Jeters; however PSA seemed to have a better record. I wouldn't touch a Jeter SP in an older SGC or BGS slab. That may be related to the earlier comment by Ted:

I don't know if that has changed in the last few years or not - I would hope so.

Ted,

The value of this card has come down to earth.

PSA 8 = $275
PSA 7 = $130
PSA 6 = $80
PSA 5 = oops and ouch

Chances of getting certain grades based on current pop:

PSA 8 = 42%
PSA 7 = 26%
PSA 6 = 13%
PSA 5 or lower 5%
PSA 9 or higher = good luck because you will need it!

At these prices you could just send to SGC for $15 and get FASTER service than any PSA service.

I'll take the OP at his word that they were pack pulled but we all know that does not mean anything. Serious. We have all pulled Jeter 1993 SPs out of packs (I hope) and we all know the odds. They really don't change.

Those saying SGC slabbed trimmed cards in the past are spreading misinformation. We ALL know where the majority of trimmed and altered cards reside.

Seriously.

Respectfully,

Mike

There is a distinction between trimmed and factory cut short, and this card is notorious for being factory cut short. Those are the ones that normally find their way into other slabs, or sometimes even PSA slabs on a second or third attempt.

I have nothing to add on everything mentioned about the Jeter, however it’s worth pointing out the Chipper in psa 9/10 would be worth grading too. Tough set to get top grades.

Reason being they sell easier and for more In psa slabs. Not because it's any easier to pass trimmed cards or get higher grades. More so, the factory short ones

Not that I at all subscribe to Mike's rosy view of SGC, but as to the Jeter SP, my recollection is that most of the controversy about trimmed cards being slabbed was focused on Beckett.
