I don't understand why people hate the teams that spend money, like the Dodgers. All the owners can afford to pay up for a competitive team. Every single one of them. Some see their team as a reflection of the city and pay up to win (and get the prestige that comes with winning), while others manage the team as if it were a convenience store chain. Why are we rewarding the convenience store chain owners like Arte Moreno and Bob Nutting, as opposed to guys like Mark Walter and Stevie Cohen?

For me, I'd love to see the Dodgers wipe the floor with the Jays so that small market teams stop bitching and moaning and starting spending money to compete.

Well, we have a Series. Pulling for Toronto, which means LA will win. Trent King

+1000. If I hear any more about how "we need a salary cap in baseball" my head is going to explode. Spend some money or sell the team to someone who will.

Do you all think any of the small market US teams would ever move to Canada? I was thinking Pittsburgh to Montreal; Seattle to Vancouver; Tampa to Toronto.

Toronto is like New York, we could support two teams easily. Seattle, it's mostly Canadians going to the games anyways. Montreal Pirates just sounds cool.

All of these teams would spend big bucks to compete with the Jays!

I don't like any of those. How about these instead?

1) Vancouver Devil Rays
2) Ottawa Nationals
3) Calgary Rockies
4) Edmonton (Forest) Rangers

I'd rename them all though.

You've got it backward . If the Dodgers who have the second highest (or highest depending on your accounting) payroll in MLB repeat as World Series champions, the bitching and moaning about the rich teams buying championships will just increase.

But the Toronto Blue Jays aren't exactly a tight fisted team either. Their payroll is the fifth highest.

I guess you're right about the bitching and moaning. I wonder how Angels fans and Pirates fans seem fine about their owners making assloads of money while fielding losers every single season.

And it's not even like the Jets and the New York Football Giants where the organizations spend money but still suck. Those are incompetent organizations. It's almost like it's the business model of the Angels and the Pirates to suck to the point just above where fans can still take it. They're not incompetent organizations at all. If I were a fan of those teams, I'd be insulted that the owner takes me for such a chump.

What is it you think I have backward? I know the complaining will increase. My point is that it's a ridiculous complaint.

Ridiculous? How?

Is it ridiculous for a business owner to treat his business as a business as opposed to operating it for the community in the public interest?

And don't you think that a less competitive "playing field" is not in MLB's best interests? MLB 's share of the pro sports market does seem to have dwindled in the last 75 years.

I'm not sure what you're talking about here, or how you got there from my comment.

Owning an MLB team is a license to print money. All the owners and the league overall are in great financial shape. The cheapskate owners would love a salary cap because they, at least in some cases, would get to pay players less than what they're worth.

Question

If there appears to be a correlation between rich teams and championship teams, how is such a complaint "ridiculous"? What's wrong with more competitive balance? Does that not make a sport more rather than less interesting?
