Thank you, Brian, for recognizing that I reside here on this benevolent site. You will recall that it was I who taught Luke the way of the Jedi and empowered him with the Force. How he used the Force is up to history to determine.
May the, oh Hell, you know the rest. |

Since we’re still talking about Luke, he went at least 1-for-2 on Hoth. He got shot down; however, he took out an AT-AT by himself.

Plus he got mauled by the Wampa on Hoth, but then chopped off an arm on the way out.

Great call on the AT-AT — the Battle of Hoth was like ‘98 Yankees vs. Padres except for the Luke outlier.

Do we know that the card actually changed hands, such that a " $3.2M loss" actually occurred?

& wouldn't Heritage give an additional 5 to 12% of the hammer to the consignor?

If you're talking about the BP, then I think their calculations assume that 100% of the BP is going to the consignor. If less than 100% went to the consignor, then the loss would be larger. Assuming, of course, that the item actually sold to a 3rd party.

Hi All- it's been ages since I last posted but I was very curious about what happened to the sale of this Ruth card. And as I checked the thread I saw my name as one of the people who once offered a Baltimore News Ruth so I thought I would share the story.
It was not in any of my auctions but in a direct sale and was available for purchase. It was a blue one, had a decent front but serious back damage. If there is a list of the ten known specimens it would be easy to pick out. I think the price we offered it for was either 16K or 18K, don't remember exactly. I had it for about a month a not a single person even asked about it. I had a pretty good mailing list back then and I'm sure most of the heavy hitters knew about it. I ended up returning it to my consignor. Back in those days it was considered a piece of memorabilia, an interesting schedule card that happened to picture Babe Ruth. It was certainly important, but not on the level it is today. Of course it doesn't explain how the Heritage one took such a hit. I guess when it sold in REA two people had to have it, and that didn't happen this time. Anyway, I remember being disappointed I wasn't able to sell it, but it was one of the examples that really lacked eye appeal. |

When I saw this post the music from the Resurrection Symphony came on in my head. Hi Barry! I know the card you are talking about. It has a little piece out of the lower left and back damage. However, if you place your thumb over the lower left and don't turn it over it is the nicest looking BN Ruth in the hobby.

Hope you are well. I'm looking at the picture on your avatar and I am guessing you are a proud grandfather! |

Hi Barry:
I’m probably pretty close to Jay’s age and have a 12 year old son, not a grandson. Imagine what that is like……. |

Nice to see you post again Barry. I remember when “Barry bowed out” (posted your goodbye thread). I think about that often bc there have been several times over the years I had enough of some members and the same BS and I thought about bowing out myself. I never went that far - the good here just far outweighs the bad- although I have gone dark for periods. Anyway, I was sad when you went away bc you had great knowledge.i don’t know if you are “back” but it’s sure nice to see you post

Thanks Phil. I am doing well but in 2023 I had open heart surgery. Pretty scary thing, a total surprise, and a very difficult recovery. Fortunately I am healthy now.
I really dropped off the board because I no longer actively collect. Sure I got a little burned out too but I have mostly happy memories of the years I spent in the industry. I still have some of my favorite memorabilia but I haven't bought anything in years. No regrets. |

Hi Barry! Looking at your profile and seeing a collecting interest of "baseball display pieces" really makes me wonder what kind of amazing pieces you have and hung onto
. I remember seeing so many great advertising pieces in the early auction catalogs that I've never seen since. They went somewhere![]() Quote:

The pool of people who will pay crazy ass money for a small piece of carboard is much shallower than many people on the board want to believe.

Hey Barry
Good to see you post. Glad you got over your surgery. That is a biggie especially at our age! I remember that BN Ruth that you had. I thought I saw it first in a hard copy, ad sheet y'all (you and Jerry) sent out? I am sure you recall better than I, but I knew the price was under 20k. Times change. Who would have known? Say hi to Judy for me and hope all is well your way, otherwise! I miss the grammar police sometimes. Quote:

Great to hear from you, Barry and glad that you're back to full health. The board was a better place with your knowledge and wisdom.

Barry, so glad that you might be making a peek back into the hobby again. But mostly that you are still on the right side of the grass.
I sometimes recall that great pizza place we used to frequent when I would drop off a consignment to you in Brooklyn. John P.S. And a 12 year old son! You old dog. |

Even larger oversized issues are getting more accepted now that PSA built a larger slab to put items in. That's one place you could look at.

Do we really know that they didn’t? It’s possible that it might have gone for even less, and the seller helped to prop it up to this level, potentially even winning it back if they ended up with the top bid.
