I love this topic - makes me drool...

Johnson - t206 portrait
Baker - Cracker Jack
Mathewson - e92
Cobb - e95
Wagner - Cracker Jack or E96!
Cy Young - t206 portrait
Griffith - t206 portrait (but I want the Old Judge!)
Rucker - e96
Speaker - T3

...and honorary HOF'er ED REULBACH! t204 Ramley...'cause he'll never get in now and it's a shame.

As the premise started with your favorite player, my all time favorite player is Robin Yount, so that would mean the card would be his 75 Topps Rookie.

My favorite Pre-War player is Christy Mathewson, and I'd pick his 1912 Boston Garter, though I'm not certain it exists (Leon, be kind enough to check your shoe box).

Honorable mentions Ty Cobb T206 Portrait Green Background.

Sorry, Boston Garters are some I hope to acquire in 2002....as far as a Christy ...he probably exists but I would have to defer the question to someone like Lew, Kevin Struss, or Terry Knouse Sr...they would know for sure.....best regards

In terms of visual appeal, not necessarily the one I'd want to have, I'd say:

Ruth - '32 U.S. Caramel

The Goudey #181, the '48 Leaf #3, and the '33 Sport Kings are also nice. But the Caramel gives you close-up, head-on look with the Babe smiling. (Not to say that there isn't some lesser-known brand out there that looks even nicer, but none are prominent enough to come to mind.)

I'd take the M101-5 over all of them any day, though.

i have two favorite cards, one prewar and one postwar.

prewar goes to the 1911 obak buck weaver, you have to look hard and long to find a card with greater eye appeal and fantastic color!

postwar goes to the 1952 topps #407 eddie mathews, i could own a dozen of these and never have enough. beats the 52 mantle hands down.

if you look deep into the eyes of both players on these cards you seen the true meaning of the game, pure innocence, they just wanted to play baseball, no hidden pretenses, true each had his downfall, but both loved the game, i never had the opportunity to meet buck weaver, but i have been around the late eddie mathews up close and in person and he loved the game of baseball and his contribution to the very end. like many early players, they didn't do it for the money. yes, some became jealous later on, given the outrageous modern day salaries, but they would still do it all over again for the same renumeration.

Pre-(Spanish-American) War:

1887 Script Phenomenal Smith - First individual card of a Baltimore baseball player (I think - anybody know of an earlier one?).

Post-War:

1911 T-212 and 1912 T-207 Buck Weavers. For the reasons Scott stated above.

Default What are your favorite cards of your favorite players?

Posted By: Bob

I just found this site about a week ago and I'm going through all the old threads to get a feel for the board, and learn about vintage sets, etc. (I'm very new to pre-war collecting).

My favorites of my favorite players:
E92 Mathewson
E92 Wagner Throwing
T206 Mordecai Brown
T206 McGraw glove at hip
T206 Waddell Throwing
Goudeys of Ruth and Gehrig
1949 Satchel Paige Bowman
1951 and 1953 Casey Stengel Bowmans
1951 Campenella Bowman
1953 Reese Bowman
1954 Berra Bowman
1954 Mantle (Bowman), also the 1959, 1960 and 1963 Mantles and 1964 AL Bombers w/Mantle, Maris, Kaline, Cash
1954 Ted Williams Bowman (and Williams 1957 Topps)
1955 Topps Jackie Robinson
1955 Aaron Topps, 1957 Topps Aaron and 1958 Braves Fence Busters w/Aaron
1959 Roberto Clemente
1959 Bob Gibson
1959 Curt Flood
1966 Yaz
1966 Catfish Hunter
1970 Reggie Jackson
1971 Vida Blue

And while it sounds like it would make many of you smack your foreheads, I've loved the look of some of the current sets like the current Fleer tradition, done in the style of the Goudeys, or the current Topps Heritage set done in the style of 1953 Topps.

I've just recently become familar with OBAKs (since I'm in Seattle, these have an additional interest for me) and E92's. I love the cards that have orange skies, etc., etc.- so unlike the more straightforward shots and layouts in the cards I saw growing up in the mid-60s. I'll be seeking some of these out regardless of who the player is if the image is interesting enough [thankfully, I don't have the set building collecting sickness, which is good, because the extent to which I have the single card sickness is bad enough].

Anyway- I love threads that have people talking about their favorites, so I resurrected this one to join in as a way of introducing myself.

By the way, can anyone recommend any books that feature photos of pre-war cards (a coffee table type book)? Through an older post on this board, I found the National Archives site which was very informative.

One of the players I have been collecting was Walt Dropo, who played for the Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Orioles and Reds (make that "Red Legs") between 1950 thru 1961. My family was friends with some of Mr. Dropo's family when I was growing up, so it was interesting to get his 1950 Bowman thru 1961 Topps cards to have an example of how different Bowman and Topps looked between those years. And since Dropo's cards are all commons, I was able to get decent condition cards of him for little $$.

I'll sell you the ENTIRE 1915 Spalding set for only $500. It even comes in a special "collectors album" that looks very much like a book. The cards are glued in so professionally that they actually look like part of the page.

Unfortunately, "Classic Baseball Cards" is out of print. Try second-hand bookstores (NOT sports stores, regular books), and check in on Amazon and Alibris once in a while (Amazon has the name listed, will let you know when they get one in). The book cost $80 new (It's HUGE, believe me, with all major sets between 1887=1955--except Topps); it should go for about $40.

Bob --

The Dropo is from the 1951 Topps Current All-Stars Series.

In addition to the 1951 Blue and Red Back game cards, Topps also produced a series of yellow-bordered team cards with black and white pictures, and two series of die-cut players with red backgrounds. These two series are known as the "Connie Mack" and "Current" All-Stars. The Current All-Stars are considered some of the toughest, nationally distributed, post-WWII baseball cards and are seldom seen in top grade with the backgrounds intact.

Best regards,
Michael

Men Against Red

(T-206 Ty Cobb)

Who is this proper young man?
A touch of pink to his cheeks,
composed mouth, eyebrows raised over calm blue eyes,
pale brown hair combed neatly
across high forehead, he is painted
on a battered piece of cardboard
hardly more than two inches high; (card)
only the brilliant red background
lends him significance.
Is this he was was all aim, power,
cunning,
spikes and fury? The greatest hitter,
hater,
the grandest dragon of them all?
"Cobb, Detroit," says the caption,
briefly.

1952 Topps Jackie Robinson

His skin seems almost made of
other than skin,
carved from some dark wood,
polished
to set off the bright black eyes,
the full lips parted in a smile
of
all encompassing determination.
Jackie, symbol to all men of the
sometimes angry ineveitable.
Only the brilliant red back-
ground
could do him justice: half
his shortstop's double play,
the opposing pitcher's night-
mare,
(card) quiet under hail of abuse,
or equal
to any in volley and sting of
words--
paradoxically, to survive
as long as he did, he must have
had
(for whatever reason!)
a bit of the Cobb in him.

(nobody pointed out that my understanding of the double play was a little wobbly)

belongs way over to the right (top part) and left (bottom part)representing the two red background cards. I should be thankful that the thing still looks like a poem!

Never saw that one before. Thanks for posting it. I never thought I would see a poem about baseball cards, much less one that I found interesting. Could have included a third verse, however - about Joe Jackson and his Cracker Jack card.

glad you like my poem--it's my poem, and it only appeared in Baseball Hobby News.

Nelson Algren wrote a great poem about the Blacksox, " Swede is a Hard Guy," (I think he gave it another name later) parts of which appear before the final two chapters of Eight Men Out, and a big section on Shoeless at the end of the text. It originally appeared in "The Southern Review," 1942.

Do not be remembering the most natural man ever to
weasr spiked shoes.
The canniest fielder and the longest hitter,
Who squatted on his heels
In a uniform muddied at the knees,
Till the bleacher shadows grew long behind him.
Who went along with Chick and Buck and Happy
Because they treated him friendly-like,
Hardly like Yankees at all.
With Williams because Lefty was from the South too.
And with Risberg because the Swede waS such a hard guy.
Who made an X for his name and couldn't argue with
Comisakey's sleepers.
But who could pick a line drive out of the air ten feet
outside the foul line
And..
I've been kicked out Algren

And rifle anything home from anywhere in the park.

For Shoeless Joe is gone, long gone,
A long yellow grass-blade between his teeth
And the bleacher shadows behind him...

Nelson Algren
from "Swede is a Hard Guy"
