Please help identify age of old baseball
Looks like a hand ball from the early 1900s, not sure if that would be a baseball. It does have similar characteristics of a lemon peel, but I do not think the cover is leather and stitching is different. Defiantly an early ball of some kind, you would need to research more.

Baseball glove collector
Baseball Glove Collector also has old baseballs shown on there site. You may be able to get an idea of what your ball is and how old it is. D.

D. Broughman,
Thank you very much for the link to baseballglovecollector.com Jim Daniel was able to help me a lot. Here is what he had to say about the ball. "This is a total lemon peel baseball. They date upwards to the 1860's & 70's. They started going to the figure eight style in the 70's. It is next to impossible to date these specifically as they were all homemade but that is an 1860's style. They are very desirable even with the split seam." He estimates the value at between $300-$500 dollars. I am probably going to list it on ebay Saturday night with the minor league pennants from the early 1900's that I posted about. Here is a better picture I hope. This is the one I e-mailed to Jim from BGC. Last edited by KNH; 11-10-2009 at 09:13 AM. Reason: Adding a hopefully better picture |
