Default One of my white whales

I've been watching for 15 years now. I've seen 3 of these, one being this one, the other 2: one in a Chicago Restaurant about 6 years ago I was in and made an offer to the owner who declined. Saw another one after the fact at auction that went for a $1000 unframed (however in better condition then the one I just picked up). Mine came very nicely pre-framed. Just THEE Best Headline/Paper I've ever seen, finally snagged one.

Thomas, you've had one heck of a good year so far on the Black Sox collection. Can't wait to see what's next.

Thomas - I am sort of a Joe Jenkins fan. Very long story. Does his memorabilia come up at all? I wouldn’t even know where to look.

Great stuff, by the way!

I have never seen a signature of his for sale outside one being in the Jack Smalling collection...I think Kevin Keating had one once upon a time maybe as well. That info card with his hand written note is closest I have ever come. He has baseball cards (zeenuts) and type 1 photos that come up for auction every so often.

I get the impression he would have been a fun guy to hang around, I read an interview he gave later in life where he basically said he was very happy being the 3rd string catcher. He also wrote letters to Comiskey from over seas while he served in WW1 that were printed in the papers that are a fun read.

Interesting that obviously the 1919 team were not just pissed off about not getting a bonus, but probably were also prone to fixing games. The attached link is about the 1917 scandal, and what also is interesting is they mention Detroit pitcher Bill James. The same Bill James that made it on to the 1919 White Sox late in the season and did pitch 4.2 innings in the series giving up 8 hits annd 4 runs. Now maybe he was just washed up, or maybe...just maybe there were more than 8 men out. LOL

I always thought Bill James and Byrd Lynn probably knew about the fix before the series started...James based on his involvement in the 1917 "fix" stuff and Lynn bc he was TIGHT with Jackson (WS roomate) and Lefty Williams...also both James and Lynn were West Coast PCL players...as were a vast majority of banned players (Gandil, Gedeon, Risberg, Williams, Chase, McMullin, Weaver)

Default 1919 Black Sox

Continuing this thread. I noticed the current Written Word auction has a Buck Weaver signature (signature attached). It does not look quite right to me, but am wondering if there are any other opinions.

Pretty sure that's the 2nd time this one has been up for sale this year. Guessing it didn't sell the first time. I'm not an expert on sigs., but I too
checked it out a few months back and compared to his other sigs and this one just does not look like his others.

Also, a pretty common name, so worried its just another George Weaver.

Last, I think that Written Word has a few bad reviews if you do a search.

So just too many red flags.

It could be an early sig. Threre are a couple of tells that occur in later sigs too but also some that are very different. With that said, I avoid anything these days if my conclusion is it "could be". I know it's a hard one to find, but tread carefully. Good luck.

Default reviving an old post

while searching through things, as Im new to the website, I thought I would post in this old thread as it is my main area of collecting. Over the years I have bought and sold many items, some I wish I had never sold (a Morris Rath signed GPC for starters). These are some autographs I currently have, including two 1917 Sox.

Very nice items Thomas, please feel free to "post away" as there are many Black Sox fans on the site that enjoy seeing pieces related to the team.

Default Harvey McClellan 5x7 1925 Photo

Picked up a nice 1925 original wire photo 5x7 of Harvey McClellan that ran for his obit. Discoloration on the front due to glue used on the back to glue piece of paper with information relating to the article.

Now if I could only find an autograph of his to go with it (I have only seen one offered on the market before)

Default Babe and the Black Sox

Great picture of Harvey, Thomas, and as you said tough auto. Thought fellow Black Sox collectors might like to check out these recently purchased EBAY items. Really like the Ruth/B Sox connection with these pics of the band performance being within a week of Landis ending ending the famed B Sox playing careers.

I figured I'd never get a Lefty Williams auto, so I went ahead and picked up this. I don't get a lot of relic cards, but I thought this would go well with my display.

From RMY's latest auction...I lost out on two great McMullin photos in the last year or so and even though this one is kind of small I will take it...great image
