Need some help from the group on value. I have the chance to buy this pennant and want to make sure I'm not overpaying due to my excitement. As someone who collects Tiger pennants I know how rare this pennant is but just need a reality check before I google " how to sell a vital organ", lol.

This is a very scarce pennant. I would say $1500.

“Value” really is a tough call for pennants that don’t often surface. Both supply and demand is low. There really isn’t an established record of sales in order get an accurate estimate. Best you can do is make an educated guess based on similar pennants and taking into account the teams and how rabid their collectors are.

If this was in a pure eBay auction? I’d say $1200-1500. However it is worth noting that a couple years ago this sold for about $4400 in a Clean Sweep auction. But again, if that was due to two bidders bashing each other over the head, then a second pennant that surfaces would likely sell for a lot less.

Not to argue semantics, but the only way you can overpay for something is if you can find a similar one cheaper. In this case, that would be virtually impossible. Even if it costs you an arm and a leg, you can't go wrong with this one.

I agree with Hank. That’s the one thing that people tend to forget (and I’m guilty too) about collectibles - There is no absolute when it comes to value. Value is a magical number decided upon between a seller and a buyer. Every seller and every buyer may come up with different numbers from sale to sale to sale, depending on any number of factors.

As a seller I have to decide what is my “let it go” price and a buyer has to decide what is their “buy price”. If we do not agree on a number hopefully we can find somewhere in between.

Here’s an example - Would I sell my car for a $1.00? No. Now, would I sell my car for $1 million? Yes. Now I have a value range. Would I sell for $500,000? For $100,000? Would I sell for $20,000?

People throw around comps and eBay sold prices and such, but these are numbers decided upon by other people for their items based on their comfort level in buying and selling. That’s not me.

To me it’s no different than when people ask me why would I send a $5 card in for grading? Who says it’s a $5 card? What does it matter to anyone else what my card is worth or what I choose to do with it?

Hey all -

A friend of mine who collects twins stuff asked me if I knew who got these on eBay. I said I’d ask around. If you did and/or are interested in trading or selling please shoot me a message.

Thanks!

Default 1960s Atlanta Braves Pennant

Does anyone know the year this pennant was sold? I'm guessing it was right after the move from Milwaukee. Thanks.

Definitely early in their Atlanta tenure...1966ish give or take a year.

Well, you can possibly "take" a year, but cannot "give" one, as the Braves played in Milwaukee the year prior (1965). I would go with 1966 as well... possibly bleeding into '67 if there was some leftover inventory.

As for the Patriots and White Twins pennants posted above.... first time I have seen either example... both spectacular. Especially the Patriots, with that super detailed artwork. One of Keezer's best ever!

Love the White Twins pennant. It's pretty amazing how many new pennants come up...there's so much variety. Gotta love it.

But didn't the Braves try to get there in 1965, but were blocked by the city of Milwaukee? Thinking if they were originlly targeting 1965, they might've wanted to have some swag ready.

Wow, very cool. The Individual Portrait Pennant is by ASCO.

The '65 AL champs pennant is by WGN, and I've never seen it before.
Interesting thing: WGN made a few AL and NL champ pennants for certain pennant winning teams throughout the 1960s ... but they never made (to my knowledge) a companion pennant for the '65 Dodgers, who of course played these Twins as the NL champs that same year.

I don't believe WGN made an NL champs pennant for the '62 Giants or the '63 Dodgers either.

Thanks to Fball guy for snagging this for me. It's been on my wantlist for some time, with Oooribay's being the only other I had ever seen. It's full size. Something about the picture, now that I look at it, makes it look smaller.

Must be the fat tassels...and/or maybe a slightly wider spine?

Both of these pennants are VERY rare and will cost a pretty penny. Not something someone is likely to trade, but you never know.

I don’t think I’ve ever traded a pennant. I rarely trade anything because if I bought something in the first place, it was because I wanted it. Never say never, but I’d have to be offered something pretty good to part with a Giants pennant. I think trading might be more prevalent between general collectors rather than between team specific guys.

Agree with both Rob and Jason. Here are both pennants, yes they are hard to find. Killebrew has a more common ASCO pic pennant but this one rarely surfaces.

Being a “general” collector I do have interest in trading, as I still favor some teams over others and generally I go for aesthetic appeal. I prefer trading to selling (the latter of which I rarely do.) Personally I’m not the biggest fan of these later WGN pennants but I am not oblivious to its rarity. (And yes I’ve been in touch with Erik.)

Regarding the Killebrew pennant: are there any difference on the back compared to the version with the color photo?

The white version of this pennant is exceptionally more difficult than the other colors (blue, black, red, green, and white) due to staining etc.

If I take a photo with my iPhone, the file is a PNG and that usually fails to upload. I then take a screenshot of the sane photo on my phone, after which it becomes a JPEG. And that always works. I’m guessing there’s a more efficient way but try this … take a picture with your phone and then a screenshot of the picture.

Default Los Angeles / San Diego Chargers pennant

I have a couple different pennants that have both cities listed on the pennant. They are clearly from 1961 and I assume that there was overstock from LA that they did not want to trash so they put San Diego on it while keeping the LA in the shield. Times were tough for the early AFL and money was tight. This is only an assumption, not something I know for sure. Anyone out there have any info on these? Maybe they made them to keep both cities interested?

I had no idea the San Diego Chargers spent their first year in LA.

Buyer beware....

This seller has an interesting perception of the word "vintage". All 5 are, of course reproductions and/or fantasy pennants with no proper disclosure...

I would imagine what happened here was the pennant maker was keen on making these for the new San Diego marketplace; but, was unaware at the time of production what the team's new logo would look like. Hence, the text within tail-end was appropriately updated; but the logo on the head-end was recycled from the previous 1960 season. This hybrid was probably their best option....

So, I don't think "San Diego" was added after-the-fact to update the pennant. I suspect this may have been a bootleg pennant that was briefly sold at some civic gathering in San Diego welcoming the new team?

Just a guess.

It's a cool pennant and I was unaware of one like it. Are there more out there for AFL teams like this? Dallas Texans? New York Titans?

Default Los Angeles / San Diego Chargers pennant

It's very possible that this was for a civic event to welcome the team, hadn't thought of that before. They did have such a function at the El Cortez Hotel before the 1961 season. They had this team photo on the wall of the banquet room. It shows the 1960 LA Chargers but is labeled San Diego Chargers.

Of special interest to "Pennant Guys"...

The latest TSOG Video features a super rare and important 1914 World Tour Pennant featuring Christy Mathewson on a unique mustard-yellow felt.

I broke out one of my "top dogs" for this episode, and hope you enjoy! Link below...

It's a pretty common pennant from the 1960s. Assuming both sets of tassels are intact and the tip isn't blunted, $50 is about the right price. There's one available on ebay for $55 at the moment

For any pennant collectors that will be at the Cleveland National, I am bringing alot more vintage pennants than usual. About 1000, all priced (thanks to my wife for the pricing help). I’m at booth 342 for anyone who wants to dig - will have all sports including a lot of rare hockey, minor league baseball, etc.

Looks like this one, but that edging seems odd to me.

Great! Found it in the book now also. It appears brown but the book shows blue. Is that normal fading? The edges look to be added after then for display purposes.

Looks like it was made that way to me. And the brown is too brown to be from fading in my opinion. In what book can you see that the picture was blue? Egner's book is black and white.

Cool...I didn't know that. In any event...It's a rare one. I haven't seen one before. Maybe someone here has.

I've owned a couple of these. They came in dark blue and black. The ornate edging is original to the pennant, but the example in question has faded significantly. Probably the result of years of direct sunlight. Still, a pretty rare find.
