Today's entry from Washington . . .
. . . is a 197 game winner with a career ERA of 2.80, who pitched a no-hitter in 1904.

I still think it is cool that he lived in and began his baseball career in the same area of the country that I live in.

This early defensive specialist managed to . . .
. . . have the all-time lowest batting average among players with 5,000 or more MLB at-bats, yet be known by a nickname derived from his perceived ability as a clutch hitter. One who could hit in a "Pinch". He was also Clark Griffith's self-chosen replacement as manager of the Senators in 1921 but, before the season was out, he was struck in the face by a line drive during batting practice and forced to retire.

"Liquor has put me out for the third time," said Jerome Willis "Red" Downs to a police detective upon his arrest for armed robbery in 1932. "First, it caused me to lose a place in the big league, where I might, by this time, have been a successful manager. The second time it threw me out of the Coast League. And now it's got me into this jam." ---- article by R. J. Lesch (SABR)

This diminutive, speedy outfielder did not hit for power, . . .
. . . but managed to accumulate 2,100 hits, including 105 triples in a 16-year career with Washington. Nick-named "Deerfoot", he had 495 career stolen bases, including a then-record 88 in 1912. His record was broken three years later by Ty Cobb.

When Moonlight Graham was told he was "playing the ninth" . . .
. . . the player he went in for was George Browne. Moonlight was in the on-deck circle for the final out in the top half and never got a chance in RF in the bottom half, but went on to a successful career as a medical doctor and part-time actor. Browne, meanwhile, played for eight MLB teams, including parts of two seasons with Washington, which put him in a Senator's uniform on one of his two T206 cards.
