Ah, OK, thanks, Kevin and Peter. I also just found this older article and now see the Ruth does have a fairly heavy crease in the corner that does hit the central image. I'll admit now the grade is a bit generous. Hope it still breaks records.

Who makes up the pool of bidders for a card like this? Is there a cast of usual suspects for these big-time cards?

Zuck, Musk, Buff(et), and the Sultan of Brunei

Funny that the Monet is described as "unseen".
Leon - it seems to me like you need to start another "guess the hammer price" contest for the Ruth!

Nope
I don't agree, just based on my "days of yore" grading. In the way back when days, a card with multiple creases that broke the paper, would be a GD card. TPGs have made it even harsher than that, so I don't see how this could have ever received a 3 grade. As a raw kind of guy, it would be a raw 2 in my book. And I would expect at least one number less from a TPG.

I see this card as a 1.5, at best, by today's standards.

Just like cards, art can be heavily restored and it is generally accepted. The Salvator Mundi documentary is a must watch for anyone that’s a fan of Leonardo. It has some controversy behind it though!
