dave-asphaltman-which southern leaguer are you referring to?? I had the wagner (authenicated trimmed on 3 sides and sold it like an idiot 2 yrs ago; have the plank(psa 5), magie (4); demmitt and O'Hara 3's) Elberfeld(5) and the following in 5's #9, 13,16,24, 33, 39, 46 and 47. All others in PSA 6. I do not have the rare Doyle version and I would love to upgrade any of my t206's that I do not have in a psa 6 if anyone has some.

I was referring to Scott Latsko above. Pretty similar last name. I'm well aware of your set registry Bill. Would make one quite envious. Since I live up the road from you in Canton...maybe I should ask..any chance for a yard sale this weekend where you'd have T206's by the quarter in a laundry basket? LOL.

don't be envious....it's why everyone sends their kids to college and mine better get scholarships!!!Although I am pretty "proud" of it and it's been a heck of a labor of love. And I wish I could find some at a garage or estate sale instead of battling the biggies on ebay all the time. Wonder if Scott Latsko is related to the fullback on the national champion Florida Gators (billy Latsko)

Bill...

I've yet to get lucky like that at a yardsale or antique shop..but then again you'd probably have to get away from the Woodstock, Canton area. I don't think there are many folks in Bridgemill or Townelake with groups of T206's to get rid of and not know what they have. Unfortunate as it may be.

Thanks for asking the question, gave me an excuse to look at a card I hadn't looked at in a while. Back has no paperloss and the card is crease free. I looked in the light to see if I could see any spider wrinkles and if they're there I can't see them. Given that and the fact that the card has nice centering I agree that it is probably undergraded. I actually bought it from Richard Ha on the B/S/T page and I remember him making a comment that the card looked like a 6 or something to that effect.

I noticed Billy Latsko for the first time this year while watching a Florida game. First time I've ever seen someone with my last name other than my family. As far as I know we aren't related but it wouldn't surprise me if we were somewhere along the way

He is one of a few pitchers who pitched a No-Hitter on opening day of the BB season.
He did this pitching for Cincy (vs Pitt) on April 22, 1898. It wasn't his rookie game, as
he had been in the Majors since 1891.

Now a follow-up QUIZ....who are the others who have pitched No-Hitters on opening day ?

I'll start with Bob Feller.....I think he one.

Like I said, Breitenstein pitched a no-hitter in his first major league start. Of coure, that depends on what you call the AA as a major league but many 19th century experts do consider that a major league

In the back of my mind, I thought I remembered Ted B. pitching a No-Hitter in his very 1st game.
However, when I looked it up in my BB encyclopedia I couldn't find this fact.

So, please forgive me for not acknowledging this fact. I better acquire a better BB encyclopedia.

Barry: According to NYT archives first ball thrown out at Twins inaugural game (against NY on April 11 at Yankee Stadium) was by Borough President James J. Lyons. First ball thrown out at Minnesota's home opener (on April 21 versus "new" Washington Senators) was by Governor Elmer Anderson. Either way I think I am missing something. I thought the answer was going to be someone cool like Bob Dylan or Baby Jay Behrens.

Unless I'm wrong, I heard the first ball was thrown out by Dummy Hoy. He was 99 years old at the time, and died later that year. That didn't turn up at all?

Threw out the 1st pitch of game 3 of the 1961 World Series at age 99; it was an honor as he had a good chance (did not quite make it) of being the 1st retired major leaguer to reach 100

A SABR geek would know and the NYT of October 9, 1961 confirms that 99 year old Dummy Hoy threw out the first pitch of the third game at Cincinnati. (Third pitch of first game would have been thrown by Whitey Ford, but I digress). Couldn't find anything correlating Hoy and the Twins.

To me he is the TOUGHEST of the Southern Leaguers. I am surprised that he isn't listed 1st (#11
on the above list) in the ranking order of the 48 So. Lgrs.

Ted, are there any others you see that are way off from where you feel they should rank? I agree on Shag & would add Carey (not even in top 50), Breitenstein, & Violat as some of the tougher SLers. I also seem to have had no problem finding multiple copies of Foster, Hart (LR) & Smith (Shreveport). Thanks for any input.

Funny you can find the Smith (Shreveport) fairly easily. I have a tough time with that one....had a PSA 3 a year ago and let it go...and havent' found another since...at least not another for a decent deal.

Is definitely one of the toughest SLers to find. It's the only card I have doubles of, and mainly for that reason. This one is ungraded. My PSA 2 is above, in a previous post. By the way, sorry for the really crappy pic. I was too lazy to scan it in tonight.

Lionel Carter was a hobby pioneer who began collecting in 1932. He is in his 90's now and Mastro Auctions recently auctioned a large part of his collection. YOu can real about it here: http://press.mastroauctions.com/images/press/2007/Premier/April/LionelCarter.pdf
