Just a tremendous piece Ricky! Thanks for sharing it.
Here's a nice little piece I just picked up... a GPC used as an early form of "junk mail" from the mid-thirties featuring Mickey Cochrane.

My pleasure, Jimmy! While we're talking cereal...a late 1930s Wheaties Baseball Broadcasts store poster and two complete 1937 single-serve cereal boxes (and the Huskies box still has the cereal inside!).

I owned the one that was sold in the REA auction. The only other one I have seen in 30 years was the Barry Halper one. I think your poster would really benefit from a high quality restoration. Anyway, it's a fantastic display!

!964 Volpe advertisement
These banners were displayed in 1964 outside Union 76 gas stations in Los Angeles, promoting 8"x10" pictures of various Dodger players given away at the stations with a minumum puchase. It measures a whopping 3 1/2' x 7', and is made out of linen. Never seen another one survive, and being a picture of Sandy Koufax makes it even more unique.

"Junk mail" 80 years ago is pretty interesting. This tire salesman/owner was ahead of his time that is for sure. Cool find Jimmy.

Thanks Ryan. The Koufax banner had water damage on the edge and some mold issues, so I ended up paying more to a professional conservator to clean and stabilize it than i originally payed to acquire it. But since I mainly collect Koufax items it was well worth it.

I'm glad you posted that banner. I have one the same size for Cleveland Indians Volpe cups from the same era. When I get home later I'll try to snap a photo and post it. Nice to see that another one of these -- albeit not advertising the same giveaway -- survived. Rob Last edited by Rob D.; 05-03-2010 at 08:21 AM. |

My favorite ad
This is an original 1907 Collier's Magazine Coca Cola ad featuring Lajoie and Wadell. It was a full page ad and is in better condition than the photo demonstrates.

More ads
I hope the pics aren't too big & taking up too much room, but I feel you get a better view of the details with these at this size.
I wish I had large cardboard or tin signs, but they are very hard to find.

Nolan knows Rhino
Not vintage, but definitely oddball as this is the only one that I've ever seen. I've always liked this one. Nolan Ryan hawking Rhino brand huge farm equipment. As you can see, the bi-line is "Some things are just built tougher than others." BTW- Poster is circa 1990.

Paul,
Great stuff! I noticed this especially because of the presence of Gehrig. It's interesting that the tag line is "Joe McCarthy and a host of Memories" but there is no Dimaggio pictured. Ruth, Gehrig, Rizzuto, Keller, Crosetti, even one behind Gehrig that looks a little like Mantle, plus a few others that I can't immediately place are all there, but no Dimaggio. Strange! Nonetheless, it's a beaut [/QUOTE] Also if you ever get tired of it LMK. Best, Mark

Calendar Print?
I believe that McCarthy yankees piece was to be used as the print as the header on a calendar. I have had it like 15 years and found it in mint condition.

Dell,
I don't like being the bearer of bad news, and maybe you already know this, but I'm 99 percent sure that's a fantasy piece. Not really a reproduction in the true sense of the word, because there was never an original piece like that. It's a modern creation. Others can check in with their thoughts. I hope I'm wrong. Best, Rob |

That Dempsey piece is fantastic!!! Thanks for posting. I can't speak for all members, but many of us love seeing pieces from other sports. We simply don't collect them, because we don't have limitless resources. If I did...I would collect multiple sports
